Left In Texas: For Texas GOP, A Week of Fringe Flare Ups

In this episode Imad and I discuss the insane amount of fringe issues that made their way into mainstream headlines because they involved elected officials. It ran the gamut from GOP presidential politics to Tea Party city council members and pinged every level of government in between.

Taking it from the top, were the national headlines casting skepticism on Governor Greg Abbott’s decision to have the State Guard monitor the U.S. military exercises known as Jade Helm 15, which has become a rallying point for anti-government doomsday preppers and conspiracy theorists. That high-profile credit forced the two current GOP White House contenders with Texas ties to address the conspiracy. Both ultimately side-stepped the issue. Rand Paul said he had heard of the plot on the campaign trail and would “look into it,” and similarly, Ted Cruz said he had his office contact for the Pentagon for answers.

Then, moving down the ballot, there was the white power rant by a East Texas Commissioner, and a Tea Party Austin city council member Don Zimmerman who berated a climate scientist over her testimony, saying he didn’t believe it when folks told him carbon dioxide warmed the Earth, because “the sun warms the Earth.”

We also chat about the latest developments in the fracking and earthquake phenomenon happening in North Texas. Keep an eye out on Monday’s hearing of a bill by Rep. Rafael Anchia (D-Dallas) that would have the state monitor and chart all earthquakes in the state over 2.0 magnitude on the Richter scale.

Keep listening to hear how it all shakes out!
