Republican Party Announce Texas Straw-Poll

by: Matt Glazer

Thu Feb 22, 2007 at 11:31 AM CST

From Quorum Report:

The Party anticipates 15,000-20,000 activists attending the straw poll with a possibility of even more. People permitted to vote in the straw poll must have been elected as a delegate to one of the last four state conventions or one of the last two national conventions.

Time would be set aside for each candidate to speak to those in attendance. At the end of the second day, credentialed delegates and alternates would be permitted to vote. Procedures will be in place to assure the integrity of the ballot and the winner will be announced by the end of the day.

While Texas Democrats are working to elect the next president, Republican's are set to talk about it.  This is the same party who has not figured out what the grassroots or netroots are, so it is not surprising that they would hold an exclusive event to discuss who best represents the evangelical wing of the Texas Republican party.

Not sure what this does for the Republican Party, except milk more money out of its supposed base.  Now instead of people giving to candidates they like, they will be required to take time off, get to Fort Worth (strikingly far away from the Hispanic communities in El Paso, San Antonio, and the Valley), and likely pay for the privilege to hear candidates speak. All so the Republican Party of Texas can maintain some sort of relevancy after the unpopular George W. Bush is term-limited out.

While they are all meeting in DFW, I will be calling voters, registering new voters, and organizing for Democratic Party. That way, whoever I endorse, wins February 5 or whenever our primary is.

this is actually interesting (0.00 / 0)
i am really curious about who will win this straw poll.

and of course, we'll have to see how it was conducted.  in other states they do this all the time, but sometimes the process is corrupted.  for example, i remember reading about an iowa straw poll back in 03, and people voted by buying little tickets to drop in the various candidate buckets.  so basically, if you had a crapload of money, you could buy a ton of tickets and stuff the ballot box.

Depends (0.00 / 0)
Guiliani is probably well ahead at the moment, but a far right candidate could work that crowd and come from nowhere.

i'll bet you're right (0.00 / 0)
straw polls do provide a window into the thinking process of people who participate, hence my interest in this straw poll.

FYI (2.00 / 2)

what? (2.50 / 2)
I find that funny, aren't you guys on the left always crying about censorship? Sorry about the curse word, mom. I'll remember that in the future.

You Can Say... (2.33 / 3)
...what ever you want, but you can't write it down for posterity.

People are going to read this and they can't choose to ignore your profanity.

Well you can say things have turned out to be... (1.00 / 1)
1/2 PC around here....if a writer is spoofed by someone who disagrees, he (or she) will censor. But they have no problem w/ someone of their own stripes using Democratic Underground type language that begins with "s", "f" "bs" and so forth.

Total sociLib hypocrisy, I tell ya.

and you guys on the right don't seem to understand private property (3.00 / 2)
this site is private property in a public space, just like a mall or movie theater or restaraunt. and just like real-world proprietors have the right to (for example) ban t-shirts with curse words (this happened at some mall a year or so ago), so do the proprietors of BOR have the right to protect their property from words they find offensive.

Then why didn't Matt say that he is prohibiting foul language when it comes out of the mouth of a conservative? (3.00 / 2)
Because that seems to be the rule that is actually in effect.  There are many instances of profanity on the site that are not censored in such a manner as Matt has used today.  Here are just three.

And after all, the language used by Sniper can't be that offensive to you, Annatopia, since you have also used such language.

Well put... (1.00 / 2)
SociLibs think that profanity is the mention of God in the public place...and when a conservative uses profanity, then it's bad...yet, it's ok for an extreme leftist like Robin Williams to go into a profanity laced tirade at a Dem/Comm fundraiser.

Private property my foot...libs also like to crash conservative events left and right in their tye-dye t-shirts and throw pies. They also are trying to block a certain presidential library at a private university...

Guess it's what you can call "creative morality.."

it's not offensive to me (3.00 / 2)
but then again, this isn't my website.  =)

take up your concerns with matt.  i'm simply stating the obvious:  this is private property in a public space and the BOR folks can maintain it as they choose.

Time to Point Out (3.00 / 2)
I didn't write any of those posts, nor was the Editor at that time. In fact, the posts you used were all with in the first 2 months as a writer on the site.

Also, you will notice that all of the curse words have been edited for content. The only exception is KT, who actually owns the site, can say what he pleases.

The problem is, I can't edit your comments like I can your diaries. If you lie, curse, or threaten a reader, BOR will delete your comment.

Those are the general rules. If you find other diaries, I will continue to make sure that everyone plays by the same rules.

Ummm (3.00 / 2)
Whether you wrote those diaries or not is irrelevant.  You are the editor, and you choose to assert that authority to censor the views of others who disagree with you.  That's your perogative, but you do it under the guise of "preventing bad language," something you have shown little to no interest in doing when someone who is not a conservative uses such language.

If memory serves, Matt, you took over as editor in January 2007.

http://www.burntoran...

http://www.burntoran...

http://www.burntoran...

http://www.burntoran...

That's just from a cursory search.

Also, the content from the diaries was not what I was talking about.  I was talking about the actual comments in the diaries I posted.

My problem is not with your censorship of language on this cite.  I can understand a desire for civility in political discourse.  My problem is with the fact that you did not appear to care about cursing on this site until a conservative decided to drop an S-bomb.  If your desire for civility (or at least a lack of foul language) on this cite is genuine, then that's great.  If you're just wanting to make conservatives abide by these rules, then that is not.

About as much genuineness as... (1.00 / 2)
"We support the troops, although we're against reinforcements.."

Or "I ignored foul language before I banned it"

Policy (0.00 / 0)
This is not the first time I have made this statement.

I didn't track them all, but it has always been pretty clear what our comment policy is.

We welcome all walks of life and all ideologies.

So we can keep comments intact, if you could e-mail me at Matt@BurntOrangeReport.com the link to the post and the word being used, I will continue to make the edits needed.

Do you honestly (0.00 / 0)
believe that, in order to support the troops, you have to support everything the President does?

Interesting Discussion... (5.00 / 1)
I tend to think of this site not as private property but as a forum that has been made public... in that the intellectual property is contributed by the members, not solely owned by the site's editor.  It somehow sounds more... Democratic.  However, I haven't read the site's actual TOS page, so you may cover it in there.  If I was wrong, this IS interesting... if I publish something here it becomes YOUR property and no longer my own?  This is an area that the blogosphere will HAVE to deal with and I'd like to see an open discussion on this topic!!

As far as profanity goes, I tend to think censorship merely based on words is bad.  If it's an obvious troll/blatant attack/libel it should be removed.  However, if it's like the Vietnam protests that said F* the War and such is THAT wrong?  Certain words can be used to invoke STRONG emotional reactions and, as such, shouldn't be strictly forbidden... however their use should be done deliberately and carefully, lest the speech look merely unintelligent and low... although who am *I* to judge anything anyone truly says from the heart as unintelligent/low... except Bush... :)

Ciao from Hawaii!

I agree (0.00 / 0)
Problem is I can't edit based on what I agree with. While it would be easier for me, I can't say that when one person says F*** that, and one says F*** you there is a difference. This is an open and public forum with very simple guidelines, no cursing, no threats.

I don't like double standard, and I haven't seen a situation were these two points don't fix the problem.

I am always open to new ideas on how to promote a civil discussion, but until that time...

To actually Discuss the STRAW POLL!!! :) (5.00 / 1)
I, for one, would like to see the Democrats do one.  For me it is a fun party building activity and kinda shows a baramoter for who the navigators are supporting at this point... when they're just starting to commit emotionally.

BOR poll (0.00 / 0)
Just wanted to point out since we placed the BOR poll on the site (both in my original thread and on the main page), John Edwards and Barack Obama have been 1 and 2. The same has been true on DailyKos. So at least among the netroots readers, those are our choices at this point and time.
