BLEH!

by: Sam Jones

It is time that we call the Dallas Morning News to account.  Many of you North Texas residents know what I'm talking about; their publications on politics are too often under-researched, biased, and even malicious at times to the liberal cause.

I have quickly grown fond of the Republican and right-leaning readers of our site who have repeatedly displayed their intelligence and respect for democratic discussion.  I think many would agree that North Texas would benefit far more from reading our discussions than they ever could from the DMN.

Today's feature article says it best:

Sometimes history remembers you for just staying alive: Apollo 13, the Unsinkable Molly Brown and maybe, just maybe, political survivor Rick Perry.

Now that Dallas is blue again, I believe it is time we ask for a less biased reporting of those political activities that are so important to us.  If we are ever to hope for a better-informed electorate, it is important that the journalistic integrity of our major publications are not twisted by partisan demands.

I can imagine that some of you in Austin would agree with me for the exact opposite reason.  I can already imagine the response that reads, "What about us in Blue Areas?  Must we forever be subjected to the liberal agenda?"

It is very important that even in the greatest Democratic strongholds of Texas that we do not allow the same heavy biased carried by the DMN to infect our conversation.  We Democrats should never fear objective reporting; though I'm not sure I could say the same for the other side...

I have considered starting a daily summary of relevant news just for this reason.  If any of you are interested, please let me know.

To close I would like to add that longevity should  not necessarily equal success.  To avoid offending I will not include the long list of emperors, tyrants, and regimes that come to mind whose only political success through a lifetime of indifference and injustice was staying in power.

Speaking of getting a liberal viewpoint, I go to (2.50 / 2)
Burnt Orange Report for that, since many of the BOR staffers are on the up and up on what the Texas Liberal perspective is...although I have my (many) moments of disagreement with BOR, my day would be empty if it werent for the frequent postings and comments for me to read through. So those of you who think I'm just here to rant and rave about the issues of the day, think again...I read EVERYTHING that's on here to keep myself informed, no matter how much I may disagree with it...and no, that doesn't mean that I'm turning liberal...I just like to be well-rounded ;)

That's great! (3.00 / 1)
I love folks who look at both sides in order to understand the issue from two perspectives.  And then form your opinion.

Cool that you are on here.

Nice (3.00 / 1)
Yes that lovely article was linked in my Perry Mandate thread. I'm glad you pulled it to the front. Because this is so typical of DMN. I can kind of see why they had to write drivel like that before the election, but even now they continue. I would really be interested to know what Belo gains from all of this.

hmm... (2.00 / 1)
I would really be interested to know what Belo gains from all of this.

The sole broadcasting rights and hosting of the only gubernatorial debate weren't enough to buy a few fluff pieces?

Regarding the article - it's not that bad.  Perry, love him or hate him, is a survivor.

With Republican dominated government, what we call bad legislation they call accomplishments.  Perry signed tort reform into law, got a redistricting map passed, consolidated HHSC, wrote a ban on gay marriage into the constitution, and even managed to get a plan on school finance through both houses of the Lege.  Those are thing that Bush wasn't able to accomplish.

I don't see anything offensive in that article, especially not this: "history will reflect that a small cabal of wealthy businessmen and business lobbyists dominated the Perry agenda to their own benefit and the detriment of the state."

In regards to North Texans benefiting more by reading the latest comment by Smarty Pants than by reading an actual newspaper - sorry.  Blogs are a great supplement to the MSM - not a replacement.

they had a mistake (2.00 / 1)
this is not his 3rd inaguration though. It is his 2nd.

They never said that. (0.00 / 0)
They said he took his third oath of office, which is correct.  He had to be sworn in, taking that oath, when Bush was elected in 2000.

I'm far from a big fan of the DMN, but IMHO there are plenty of articles in there to take objection to over a pretty boilerplate puff piece.

Seriously? (3.00 / 1)
My personal feeling is that it's a little too early to proclaim with any certainty that Dallas has gone "blue" -- the tide has shifted against Republicanism in lots of places in Texas for now, but we can't grow complacent or overconfident.

I can imagine that some of you in Austin would agree with me for the exact opposite reason.  I can already imagine the response that reads, "What about us in Blue Areas?  Must we forever be subjected to the liberal agenda?"

Except, as an Austinite, that sounds to me like total baloney, unless you exclusively read the Chronicle. The Statesman is frequently Republican-friendly and scarcely a fraction as liberal as the city it covers. I mean, they endorsed Perry in '06 and Bush in '04, which is frankly an embarrassment. The local TV stations are too busy doing silly, sub-par exposes to actually evidence a bias one way or the other, all of the Daily Texan's national and lots of their state coverage comes from the wire, the talk radio stations obviously tilt right, and KUT... well, okay, I'll give you that one.

Still.
