Where To Go From Here: A Postscript on this election with a big map

by: RBH

Wed Nov 08, 2006 at 05:20 PM CST

Last month, I split Texas into nine areas, and I made the following comments on the gubernatorial race here:

Due to the huge split, it is very likely that Bell will win more than 17 counties.

Turns out that Bell did win 34 counties. Which is the one thing I got right about this race.

Chris Bell gets the ignoble prize of having the worst percentage showing of any Texas Democratic Gubernatorial candidate in history. Or at least in the last 130 years.

But things can't be that bad. Right?

Go under the fold for the regional map

Here's the percentages for the Gubernatorial race:

Houston Area (pink): 38% Perry, 32% Bell, 15% Carole, 14% Kinky
Dallas/Fort Worth (green): 37% Perry, 36% Bell, 16% Carole, 11% Kinky
Austin/San Antonio (pink): 35% Bell, 33% Perry, 18% Carole, 13% Kinky
North Texas (skyblue): 46% Perry, 23% Bell, 18% Carole, 12% Kinky
West Texas (orange): 46% Perry, 21% Carole, 18% Bell, 14% Kinky
East Texas (orange): 44% Perry, 27% Bell, 18% Carole, 10% Kinky
Central Texas (yellow): 41% Perry, 24% Bell, 23% Carole, 12% Kinky
The Rio Grande Area (green): 40% Bell, 32% Perry, 19% Carole, 8% Kinky
Southeast Texas (skyblue): 36% Perry, 26% Bell, 21% Carole, 15% Kinky

But statewide, things are sorta moving in neutral.

Lt. Gov: 58/37 Dewhurst
AG: 60/37 Abbott
Comptroller: 59/37 Combs
Land Commish: 55/41 Patterson
Ag Commish: 55/42 Staples
Railroad Commish: 54/42 Jones
Supreme Court: 51/45 Willett

Four candidates had higher percentages than Perry, but so did their opponents.

I'm not a Texas resident, but I think the time is now to figure out how to get the Democratic Party some traction and momentum in Texas.

From what I see, there's a lot wrong with how Republicans run Texas, and Texas has to be getting riper for reform, right?

I don't have all the ideas here, but it's time that people look for these ideas.

Any thoughts or ideas on how to improve on the 2006 showing?

yeah...organization??? (0.00 / 0)
The state party organization (ironic that I call it that, huh?) has to get up off its big fat white upper middle class butt and start supporting Dem candidates.  It needs to:

1.  Create basic starter packages for candidates (media contact lists, for instance, that don't have to be developed from scratch for every campaign but are created AND MAINTAINED at the state level for every city, county, district, region, and interest group),

2.  Educate potential candidates (for instance, hold classes to educate potential candidates about what they can expect if they decide to run and hold them EVERY QUARTER in every large city and every region -- part of the problem with finding quality candidates is there is too much uncertainty in the nomination and campaign process, so eliminate as much uncertainty as you can, for pete's sake),

3.  Create a cadre of campaign organizers, people who know how to get things done, who know how to set up and organize campaign offices, have a CLUE about manpower requirements (what is more frustrating for volunteers than going to a campaign office and being giving makework to do?  volunteers want to DO, even if it's licking envelopes.  if you don't need volunteers this week, TELL THEM SO), who know how to motivate staff and volunteers and communicate with the world outside the campaign office, and preferably have a history of accomplishment in private industry, not just politics.  To do this, you might have to figure out ways to pay actual people actual living salaries.  Otherwise, you just lose a heckuva a lot of ability and watch your state offices go to Repugican goons and brown-nosers.

4.  I could go on but I'm saving it for a letter to Boyd Richey....

Soooooo...anyone want to add to this list????

Voter Reg databases (0.00 / 0)
I'm pretty sure that a voter database, similar to the one the DNC is using in Missouri, or Republican databases, would just be massive.

And it would probably be pretty useful too.

I'm trying to get a similar thing (0.00 / 0)
But for the Democratic party itself.  We need precinct chairs, and some county chairs.

Please post your letter to Boyd Richey, when you get it sent off.  I'd love to see it!
