George Antuna: Alcohol, Accidents, Ambulances and Lies

by: Matt Glazer

Tue Oct 31, 2006 at 00:45 PM CST

According to George Antuna’s “family values”, drinking and driving is a perfectly acceptable practice, as is drunken quality time in the back seat of a car with a lady other than your wife.  If his indefensible position on school vouchers, his lavish devotion to Jim Leininger, or his “service” to KBH and Rick Perry weren’t enough to disqualify him from public office, perhaps the two attached police reports are.

On two separate occasions, George Antuna- Republican candidate for State Representative in House District 118- has exhibited the sort of reckless judgment that seriously undermines his ability to faithfully serve the constituents of HD-118.

According to the first attached police report, between 2:16am and 5:15am in the early morning of June 21, George Antuna and a lady friend of his (5 feet 4 inches, 195 pounds, oy) were pulled over by the police in Selma after a long night of imbibing and carousing and who knows what else.  Antuna’s lady friend was neither his wife nor the mother of his twins.  Rather curious, George.

During the police stop, George Antuna was told to stay in the car.  Antuna’s lady of the evening tried the ol’ “do you know who he is?” routine, pointing to Antuna and telling the cops, “He works for Rick Perry."  Can’t a drunk girl in a truck with a Rick Perry staffer just get on down the road?  Not so fast my friend…

According to the police report, “I detected a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage from Antuna. I believed Antuna was intoxicated and unable to operate the truck.”  Woops.  Now, we wouldn’t want to embarrass Governor good hair by getting arrested for DWI, would we?  The police officer described Antuna as having slurred speech and “bloodshot and glossy” eyes.  If I were him, the thought the ass whipping coming from the wife would make my eyes bloodshot too.

Rather than take the bullet (Republicans love to refer to this treasured quality as accountability), Antuna pulled a Gene Seaman and dropped his lady friend under the bus.  Though, to Antuna’s credit, at least this woman was neither his wife nor the mother of his twins.

The police arrested Antuna’s lady friend for driving while intoxicated.  They drove him to the police station so he could sober up and get a ride home.

What a great dad – leave the wife and twins at home, throw back a few, get loaded with the lady friend and fall asleep in the truck at 2:00 in the morning.  Gotta love those Republican family values…

I’ve made mistakes – we all have – but I try to learn from mine.  I certainly do my best not to REPEAT them.  I mean you drink, you drive, you get caught at 2:00 in the morning with the other more portly woman, you say you are sorry, you ask God for forgiveness and you promise not to ever do anything this stupid ever ever ever again.

Right? WRONG!
It actually gets worse.

According to the attached police report #2, on January 13 at 3:30 in the morning, George Antuna’s drinking and driving caused a 4-car accident that sent 4 people (2 of whom were teenagers) to the hospital. The police report states that the likely cause of the accident was the fact that Antuna “had been drinking”.

To add insult to injury, when asked by the police officer what his occupation was, Antuna responded by saying “Sales Manager.”  WRONG! From 2000 through the end of 2005, George Antuna actually worked for US Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison as a “Regional Director” in her San Antonio office.  Perhaps it is unfair of us to call him on this lie.  Maybe we should give Antuna the benefit of the doubt – he was probably too drunk to remember his real job.  Or maybe selling KBH’s record of failure feels like the job of a sales manager.  Regardless, I’d rather not find my lawmakers in the “I like to lie to cops after drinking and driving and causing a 4 car wreck that sent teenagers to the hospital” aisle, even if it is a drunken lie.

George Antuna is unfit to serve.  He lacks the character and the judgment to be an effective public servant.  His slogan is: Your Choice for Change. He’s a former staffer of KBH and Rick Perry who has already pledged his allegiance to Tom Craddick.  That's three strikes against him in my book.

Self-destructive behavior is one thing – drinking and driving and sending kids to the hospital is something else.  The last thing the Texas House needs is another cheating, lying, drunken Republican.

We aren't taking this out of context...

Looks like Team Craddick (0.00 / 0)
didn't vet their candidate well enough huh?

This is ridiculous, Antuna should withdraw from the race out of respect for anyone who has ever been injured or had someone injured by a drunk driver.

Why haven't we seen this in the Express-News? (5.00 / 1)
Good job.  Too bad the paper of record in San Antonio doesn't feel the need to keep its own readers informed before they vote.

What's the point (5.00 / 1)
of including the woman's height and weight?

what relevance is there at all?

if she had been 5'1" and 125 lbs would that have made a difference?

why not post a photo of yourself, since you must be in perfect physical form...

Joke (5.00 / 1)
Read the police report. It has all of the details of both instances and I was trying to use those subtle facts bring a little humor to your day.

Notice the line, "Rather Curious, George". This would be a subtle attempt to make people laugh as well.

If you would like to see me standing next to KT while he wears a yellow hat, I can do that as well. I make no promises though.

If that's you're idea of being funny (3.00 / 2)
you failed miserably.

seriously, where's the humor in it?  what's the punch line?

her weight had nothing to do with the incident.

you're calling her "pudgy" was meant to be a cheap shot.  nothing subtle about it.  last time i checked, she's not running for any office.

But Antuna is. (5.00 / 2)
Nice try at deflection, Bob.  If this gets out into the great wide open, it's Antuna on toast.

[ Parent ]
what deflection? (3.00 / 2)
i'm making a legitimate observation at a comment made in poor taste about someone who's not even the candidate?  i'd hope someone at bor would have the good taste and common sense to delete those snide references.  if the author thinks they are funny, he must share a sense of humor wiith john kerry.

Antuna on toast sounds great (0.00 / 0)
But I don't see what the woman's weight ("oy") has to do with getting there.  It's a good article and that comment cheapens it.

Wow. (0.00 / 0)
You certainly have a case of The Serious.  I thought the whole diary not only kinda funny, but extremely well-sourced and well-written.  I actaully learned something useful about a candidate in my daughter's district I can pass on to her, and she can pass on to her neighbors.

Antuna's a little too pretty to be trusted, anyway.

Great job, Matt.  Hugs.
