Open Thread Round-Up

by: Karl-Thomas Musselman

Sat Oct 28, 2006 at 10:18 PM CDT

Yes, believe your eyes. It's an Open Thread and a Texas Round-Up in one. Mindblowing.

  • I've created 2 new BlogAd strips here on BOR. One is a premium strip to run above the standard one at the left. The other is an exclusive strip for one ad to run just to the right. As you've noticed, there are a lot of ads right now so I'm creating some new options.

Please check out our advertisers too like the TDP, John Courage, the DCCC, and the DSCC.

  • Will you help John Courage get over $40,000 mark on the combined Netroots ActBlue page? The campaign is doing the last of its TV buys. They will be releasing an Ethics commercial on Monday.

  • Barak Obama was in Austin today for a book signing. Now that Mark Warner is supposedly out of the 2008 Presidential race, I have to say that I'm attracted to Obama. Of course, I'd more attracted if while he was in town, he'd lend aid to Texas Democrats. This is like the 3rd time he's been in Austin and done nothing publicly to help Texas Democrats while here.

You can now sound off about Texas' 35-31 win over Tech.

The last time he was here, wasn't he raising money for Juan Garcia?

But I think you are thinking of Wes Clark. He was here for Garcia and also wants to run for president.

Back before the 2004 elections, he came through down and picked up a lot of money for his then Senate bid, even after he was like many points ahead in the polls. That year, 5 Democratic Congressman fell in Texas.

Obama will be the next President (0.00 / 0)
I also was a Warner fan because he seemed to have the shortest path to taking back the White House.  Southerner.  Governor.  Businessman.

But I'm kinda glad Warner dropped out because I was secretly hoping Obama might change his mind about '08.  Whereas Warner looked strong on paper, Obama is the real deal.  He's the most inspiring political leader I've ever seen.  He's Howard Dean with a smile.  He's JFK & Bill Clinton without the sex scandals.  He could prove to be a modern day FDR who changes the entire electoral equation for a generation and provides real help to real people.  He could put a new, welcoming face on American foreign policy so that the world doesn't hate us so much.  It's going to take a lot of work to clean up the mess that Bush has created, but Obama may prove to be the perfect medicine for what ails us.

Obviously, I'm excited about Obama.  We're hosting a book club discussion about Obama's latest book, and we'll also discuss his possible '08 candidacy, in December after the elections.  Learn more at www.TexansForObama.com.

What: Obama meetup and book club
Where: Jo's Coffee, South Congress
When: Thursday, Dec. 7, 7:00pm

No argument that it'd be nice for him to do a fundrasier for Texas D's.  I'm not sure this weekend would have worked because the Texas Book Festival was a pretty big ordeal.  I tried to get a wrist-band at 8am to hear Obama's speech, and there were already 600 people ahead of me, each trying to get 2 wristbands for the House chamber with only 400 seats.  I simply couldn't believe that many people froze their butts off on a Saturday morning just to hear a guy talk.  I don't know of any other political leader, not named Clinton or Dean, who inspires that level of enthusiasm.  While I didn't get in, my friends said it was an incredible speech.  They had high expectations for Obama, and he somehow surpassed those expectations.  Obama represents the true spirit of the American Dream.

When we have our December meetup, we'll discuss a strategy to bring Obama back to Texas.  And this time, we'll make sure he does a fundrasier for the Texas D's.

Get on board the Obama train.  It feels good to be inspired again.
