Worst. Attack. Ever.

by: Phillip Martin, Progress Texas

Fri Oct 27, 2006 at 03:28 PM CDT

Rep. Martha Wong's campaign has officially gone desperate:

Is this not the worst ad possible for this district? HD 134 makes up (by and large) an educated, affluent section of Houston; two-thirds of people in the district have a bachelor's degree or higher. Why on earth would anyone think this ad would be effective? Can you imagine if this ad ran in HD 48 here in Austin -- how much people would laugh?

I think the Martha Wong campaign just lost. Go help Ellen Cohen make it certain...and enjoy the laugh this afternoon.

That sound... (0.00 / 0)
the 'dah dah daaaaah' sound effect they use in there? What is that from, it sounds so familiar, like it's from some awful Microsoft program or game like 7 years ago.

I think that's the sound they use whenever they announce royalty. You know -- like when they announce that emperor without any clothes.

Martha Wong is running this ad on network television, not cable. That means that Wong just spent tens of thousands of dollars to tell the 1.8 million people who don't live in her district and can't vote in the race anyways to vote against Ellen Cohen.

Umm... (0.00 / 0)
Broadcast TV is the most powerful medium.  So what if you hit a lot of extra people, you still hit YOUR people.  If you have a solid mail program, why NOT use the most effective mechanism out there... especially when you can SPREAD YOUR MESSAGE WITHOUT THE OTHER PERSON RESPONDING!!!

As far as cable goes, it's a VERY mixed bag.  A LOT of habitual voters still just watch about 80% broadcast TV, including the local news.  Plus, I know Houston zones are kinda messed up and this District might be split between two (dunno on that one).  Finally, to hit ANY saturation level for cable subscribers is often MORE EXPENSIVE than cable.  A whole lot of unscrupulous people will tell you cable is the answer... when in fact it's sometimes a good idea and somethimes not.  And it's NEVER as good as broadcast...

You're in a position to give a well-formed opinion. I'm not sure screaming IN ALL CAPS FOR NO FRICKIN' REASON is necessary.

that won't come anytime soon for the GOP.  The silly and quite frankly dumb ad will help, not hurt, Cohen in this very well educated and  “get it” district in Houston.

I hate to bust up the party... (0.00 / 0)
But this ad actually looked pretty good to me.  It broke through the monotony of campaign commercials and spread a message using humor.  If you can make people remember what you said (called stickiness) then it's effective advertising.  I certainly wouldn't be calm if this ad were running against ME!!

Obviously, I support Cohen 100%.  But, compared to that ad I saw from her camp, this thing isn't just a work of art, it's the freaking Mona Lisa!

One thing I would change... (0.00 / 0)
I'd repeat Elen Cohen two additional times in the ad..  For instance, when she says "That'd be me" they could have her say "That'd be me, Elen Cohen, your friendly Canadian tax lady" or something like that...

Remember that commercial with no voice; just piano and sound effects?

That beats this one very very much so.  There is nothing wrong with a humerous ad; but this was funny to me because of its stupidity.  If this was some race I wasn't knowledgable, I would probably go, "HAHHAHAHHAHAHHA!!!  I'm not voting for that lady! [wong]"

We just have two totally different senses about TV ads. You won't to break through, and doing it with humor may work in some districts, but not with cohen. Imagine if Ben Bentzin ran an ad like that against Donna Howard, or if Fleece ran one like that against Strama. It would be laughed out of Austin...

Maybe you don't really know the district, but that's not going to play well for the people that are actually voting in that district. Citywide, maybe, but not in that district.

I actually think that ad could have been effective in a General Election against Howard (special election... no...  those voters tend to be more serious).  That ad wouldn't exactly work in a rural East Texas district, but in an affluent/highly educated urban district, I rather like it.

They stole from a DCCC ad... (0.00 / 0)
The oilman toward the end of that ad is the same guy that was used in a DCCC spot in Indiana.  Perhaps they just both got the image from the same source, but it'd be pretty funny if they stole this picture from a DCCC ad.

It's unintelligible, frankly (0.00 / 0)
But really, I don't think many undecided (read: less knowledgable) voters in this district will even understand this ad.  Ellen isn't widely known or identified as "Canadian".  She's not from there, she just lived there for several years.  She doesn't have a Canadian accent, and unless you've been to a private house party for her you've probably never heard her even talk much about living in Canada. The ad is frankly, weird and silly.

I'll go back to my strictly, unscientific observation about this race:  As I drive and walk around the district every day, for every Martha yard sign I see, I see as many as 10-15 Ellen signs.  That's a 10:1 ratio of people who are passionate enough about this race to have a yard sign.  I see at least 1 or 2 bumper stickers for Ellen every day and, except for Martha's cars (she has at least 3 with "SO" plates..what's up with that?) I've never seen a car with a Martha sticker.  Unscientific? yes.  Comforting? very.

This is the only question 'cause Wong is toast.
