Texas Round-Up

  • An interesting note from Sandra Ramos (for whom I have a lot of respect).
I just wanted to let you know that as of Monday, February 20th, I have stepped down as campaign manager for Kirk Watson’s senate campaign and will be working with Sarah Eckhardt’s campaign for county commissioner, precinct 2.

I am very excited about the opportunity to work with Sarah in these final weeks of the campaign and Kirk’s staff is in the very capable hands of Steve Scheibal – who is transitioning the campaign into more of a policy based organization.

  • An interesting article on the effect of newspaper endorsements in political contests.  I think it follow that the more informed the public about an election, the less effect any endorsement has and that their importance may be rooted in how the campaign uses them in other materials or in simple tradition.

  • Mike Martinez has won 5 out of 5 local endorsements in his race to win the open Place 2 "Hispanic" seat on the Austin City Council.  They include: Travis County Sheriff's Law Enforcement Association, Austin Police Association, the Austin/Travis County EMS Employee Association, the Austin Small Business Group, and the Hispanic Bar Association of Austin.  But the professional groups do not always foretell what the partisan groups will do.  There is a 3 way race for the seat.

Big Mo' (0.00 / 0)
KT, thanks for bringing some much-needed attention to this important city council race.

Because Austin's population will double in the next 20 years, we must do everything we can to protect our beloved small businesses before they get pushed out by the big box stores.  Austinites choose to live here for a reason, and it's our unique small businesses that make Austin special.  Therefore, Mike is especially proud of his small biz endorsement.

This Saturday, come see for yourself why Mike is the only city council candidate to sweep all 5 of the first round endorsements.  Mike is hosting a picnic potluck, and the weather should start clearing up this weekend.  Come join the fun!

Mike has the Big 'Mo, but he still needs your help.  If you would like to volunteer, then please email  the campaign at info@votemikemartinez.com.  Thanks for your support!

Broad Base of Support for Mike (0.00 / 0)
As Ian pointed out, Mike is the only city candidate to sweep all five of these endorsements - not even the Mayor or Brewster have been able to do that.

K-T points out that it maybe be harder for Mike to pick up support from the more partisan groups.  Mike has already garnered support from such solid Democrats as Andy Brown, Rep. Eddie Rodriguez, TG Caraway, Fidel Acevedo, Cecilia Crossley, Walter Timberlake, David Butts and Robin Rather.  Click here for the full list of supporters so far.

Don't forget about Jackie Goodman! (0.00 / 0)
As a neighborhood and environmental activist, Jackie has an proud Austin legacy.  Not only is she supporting Mike, but she agreed to be the campaign treasurer.

Go Mike! (0.00 / 0)
In 2002, I was staff for a Democrat who won in Travis County. Mike, at the time VP of the firefighters union, was incredibly helpful to the Democratic effort. Personally and professionally I think he'll make a great city councilmember, he's definitely a "let's get the job done" and not bicker about who gets credit and whose ego is stroked sort of guy. We need more of those in politics. - Brian Dupre

Go Mike go (0.00 / 0)
Mike is the most experienced candidate in local affairs, and he'll be great in City Hall.

I like Mike (0.00 / 0)
Mike is extremely hard working and I think he'll do a great job representing us at City Hall.  The other two candidates in this race, are good people too.  Mike has the advantage of having a lot of experience working with people, and with organizing as the President of the Austin Firefighters Association.  He has great communication and analytical skills, and will be diligent in fighting for what he knows is right for the community.

That's great news about Sandra Ramos working for Sarah now.  She's going where she's needed. Sarah made a brilliant move in getting Sandra to come work for her. Kirk has already won his election.

Good luck to both Mike Martinez and Sarah Eckhardt.
