SA Express-News Endorses Uresti & Bell

by: Karl-Thomas Musselman

Mon Feb 20, 2006 at 01:08 AM CST

Well even if the San Antonio Express News can't figure out what is common sense to everyone else in the battle between Ciro Rodriguez and Henry Cuellar, they went bold and endorsed Rep. Carlos Uresti in his primary challege to Sen. Frank Madla.

Although Madla's seniority in the Texas Senate is valuable, it's time for a change.

We recommend challenger Carlos Uresti in the Democratic primary. A state representative from Bexar County's District 118 since 1997, Uresti displayed bold leadership. As chairman of the House Human Services Committee, he strived to boost the state's overburdened Child Protective Services. Uresti has earned a promotion.

He spearheaded efforts to oppose House Bill 2292 in 2003. That bill, which eventually passed in the Republican-controlled Legislature, cut funding for the Children's Health Insurance Program and lowered the personal needs allowances for nursing home residents.

Although Madla voted against the final bill, his critical vote to bring the measure to the floor for debate allowed its eventual passage. The district's constituents need a leader in Austin they can rely on when it comes to caring for the state's poor, young and elderly.

And go watch Uresti's ad again.

And in a snubby op-ed piece, the SAEN has leant their support to Chris Bell in this rousing endorsement.

Bell served on the Houston City Council before moving to the U.S. House, where his tenure was cut short by redistricting.

He will be an able spokesman for a Democratic approach to governing Texas.

The Houston lawyer has promised a bold vision for the state and an effort to move out of the "partisan trenches."

He is offering plans to improve the skills of the state's work force and provide ethics reform. Bell also supports a nonpartisan redistricting process for the state.

Democratic voters should give Bell a chance to make the case for his ideas in November.

Is "give Bell a chance to make the case for his ideas" SAEN speak for "we really think both of these Democrats are nothing better than sacrificial lambs even to the unimpressive Perry"?  Ugh, we've got a long way to go as a Party.

Rousing? (3.00 / 2)
For an endorsement, it was anything but rousing.  Obviously they were very impressed by Chris Bell. Sounds more like they just picked some things from a media kit bio and used those as the basis for the endorsement.  No doubt everyone in San Antonio will be moved to go to the polls and vote for Bell.

Sarcasm (3.00 / 2)
Kinda sounda like Karl-T might have been a bit sarcastic (too bad there are no 'rolls-eyes' smilies to make that clear.)

;>?  (wink with a twist)

Rousing is what Ken Molberg wrote about Bob Gammage.

Tepid is what I'd call all these "oh yeah, him" endorsements from the MSM papers.

[ Parent ]
Tepid? (3.00 / 2)
Tepid with a slight chill to it.

[ Parent ]
Damned by faint praise (3.00 / 2)
This seems to be yet another 'endorsement' of Bell that falls into the category of 'damned by faint praise.'

I know EVERYONE wants to talk about the Guv race (4.00 / 2)
But can we also give some props to Uresti?

thejeffersonian.blogspot.com

But ... (2.00 / 3)
This is the Bob Gammage Blog. What did you expect?

[ Parent ]
But sometimes it's the Chris Bell Blog (3.00 / 2)
Cut and pasted by Damon.

[ Parent ]
Whatever (2.00 / 2)
This blog is anything but objective. Byron L., where are you?!

[ Parent ]
Well it's true (3.00 / 2)
Damon should just link to the Chris Bell website.  Would save him time.

[ Parent ]
sandra, way to be pointless (3.00 / 2)
why is it that when a bunch of people support someone you don't like, and few people support your guy, you think it's because of some bias?

KT posted that he got the endorsement. What more do you want? A coronation?

It still wouldn't make a difference. He's going to lose. Sorry.

[ Parent ]
The point is (1.67 / 3)
That BOR is not objective, and that's part of the reason you Gammage kids like it here, is it not?
K-T doesn't even try to be objective. On the other hand, he's just a kid with a website, not a consultant.
Austin is full of consultant wannabes and it's pretty damn annoying.

[ Parent ]
Really? I didn't realize... (3.00 / 2)
you thought so much of the grassroots activists here in Austin that are actually electing Democrats, even in R districts.

[ Parent ]
Grassroots activists (4.00 / 2)
Are campaign volunteers, but a volunteer is not a consultant. Don't take it personally, but it takes plenty of years of field work, fundraising and a willingness to do the dirty work. First, you get people to trust you, then you have to prove that you're able to bring in the money. You have to know demographics, have the ability to identify voters and you have to have something to work with.
Texas Weekly has the best synopsis of why Donna Howard won. Of course, grassroots activism is part of the reason, but she had professional consultants on the job. Voters in a GOP-leaning district are used to the Rovian direct mail program and that's what she used to hit Bentzin. Republican scandals are a gift to the Democratic opposition, but you gotta know how to use that effectively. Bottom line - Donna Howard was a great candidate who used her resources well.

[ Parent ]
I'm missing your point... (5.00 / 1)
you were deriding the activists as 'consultant wannabes'?

Expand on that, please!

[ Parent ]
If you want to talk strategy (2.00 / 1)
I'm all for it.

[ Parent ]
But that's not what we talking about... (5.00 / 2)
You were saying that Austin is too full of 'consultant wannabes' which is a pretty clear slam at the activists who are working hard to get Democrats elected and make sure people like you get paid.

Please, elaborate.

[ Parent ]
Since when? (3.00 / 2)
Karl has been very objective for as long as I've read and posted on BOR. More objective than anyone else as far as I'm concerned.

You don't seem to like the fact that he IS objective and allows people to respond to the Bell campaign here, which the Bell campaign doesn't allow them to do on the Bell campaign website, and occasionally responds himself.  You don't seem to like the fact the people have used BOR to point out the inconsistencies, misrepresentations and outright lies by Bell and his campaign. And most of all you don't seem to like the truth about Chris Bell. Which is reflected by both the candidate and his campaign.

We are merely reacting to the glare of that reflection.

[ Parent ]
...moot. (4.00 / 2)
This is a political blog. Since when were those ever objective?  If you want that, I guess you could try Traditional Media, but even then.  League of Women Voters?

The point is that while we report on events across the state, sometimes bringing you new content not found elsewhere, but often providing insight on stories written elsewhere, in all of that I can hardly say that any blogger in Texas is purely 'objective'.

Maybe people don't notice it when we are only pushing the Democratic Party or fighting the good fight where we more or less all agree.  But this is primary season and as such, people hold different viewpoints.  Which is the point of a primary season.  You want to read Pro-Bell 100% of the time?  Check out Greg's Opinion.  You want objectivity without much coverage at all in comparison of the Governor's race?  Check out Off the Kuff.  You want humor on it? Check out PinkDome.  All great bloggers, though all with their own lenses just like here.

You want a place to thrash out all the news possible on the Governor's race, with one front page poster who has been criticized for being too Pro-Bell, the other criticized for bringing one of the lone Pro-Gammage voices to the Texas Blogoshpere a couple months ago, and another that has provided some of the most in depth fresh unfiltered information on both candidates without ever taking a side by way of the 40/40 project?  We've got all that right here on BOR.

Maybe we are a crew of 20-somethings with a website.  But it's because we collectively have the opportunity and connections to offer you a lot of information, and a web-platform with checks and balances.  Our activity is spent as much offline as it is on, and the number of campaigns that the writers here have worked on, and the ideas that effect elections that we've come up with are more than worth the occiasional ageist remark.

I respect what those older than I have done in the past. I only ask that those older ones respect what we've contributed in the few short years we've been active as well.

I knew Byron Le Masters. (1.50 / 2)
Byron LeMasters was a friend of mine...

[ Parent ]
Byron LaMasters (3.50 / 2)
Byron LaMasters was a frind of mine too... considering that I inherited ownership of this site from him, and he brought me on board when I hadn't even come to Austin yet to prove myself, and considering I'm willing to bet that you haven't drunkenly shared a bed with him at TYD conventions either...

Yeah. I've heard of him.

Oh gawd (1.75 / 4)
Keep the sordid details to yourself. It was a joke, K-T Muscleman.

[ Parent ]
Hehe. (5.00 / 1)
Hey, gotta keep you older folk on your toes!  Though Byron may be making some appearences again this next week in regards to the HD-106 race so who knows.

I'm thrilled! (4.00 / 2)
Yay Carlos!

And that ad kicks ass!
