It’s been an eventful few weeks on the “people saying ridiculous stuff about abortion” beat, between the pro-life writer who said that abortion seekers and abortion practitioners should be hanged and Matt Mackowiak calling rape and incest “minor issues.”

Now, Republican Morgan Meyer, who is vying for the HD-108 seat, has acknowledged that he would not protect women’s right to seek an abortion, even in the case of rape or incest.

He also voiced support for HB 2, including the restrictions that went into place last week that closed all but seven abortion clinics in the state.

In a video released last week by Battleground Texas, Democratic candidate for HD-108, Leigh Bailey, expressed her support for pro-woman, pro-family policies, saying, “Texas should be a place where every family has a fair shot. That means that my daughter should make the same wage as my son for doing the same job. That means that healthcare decisions should be made by a woman, her family, and her doctor, not by politicians in Austin.”

“Texas women need leaders who will listen to them and be a voice for them, and Morgan Meyer has made it clear he would side against us,” said Patsy Woods Martin, Annie’s List Interim Executive Director, in a statement last week.

“He has continued to stumble when answering whether he would support fair pay legislation,” she continued. “He’s ignoring what women need – and that means he’s dangerous for Texas. Above all, Texas women deserve a leader who will fight for them. That’s why Leigh Bailey was one of the first candidates we endorsed this cycle. Her unwavering dedication to making government work for Texans is something we haven’t seen enough of in Austin.”
