[TX-32] Get to Know Will Pryor

by: Whiskey Sam

Tue Sep 26, 2006 at 07:54 AM CDT

(It seems at times that every race in Texas is in play for the Democrats and yet little has been said about the very close race in CD-32 (Martin Frost's old seat). Will Pryor is raising a ton of cash, working hard in this gerrymandered district, and all in a year that has more seats in play than one can easily remember. - promoted by Matt Glazer)

Cross posted at The Daily Kos

We'll leave no district behind, because no district is hopeless.

I grew up in North Dallas, in an area that is part of the 32nd Congressional District currently represented by Pete Sessions.  For my entire life I’ve lived with a sense of learned helplessness that the 32nd is Republican, and that’s just the way it is.  I refuse to believe this garbage anymore.  I know enough Democrats in this part of Texas…enough people who say the same things that I say about the way things are in the 32nd…that I’m starting to believe that the dark days of regressive politics have an end in sight.

If this optimism is going to have any payoff, the learned helplessness of Dallas Democrats must be shed in favor of a collective togetherness and effort.

Let me introduce you to the 32nd Congressional District in Texas, and Candidate Will Pryor.

We can make this happen, but we’re all going to have to work together.

The history of the 32nd Congressional District in Texas is well-known by now.  In 2003 Tom DeLay’s redistricting efforts focused on marginalizing the political career of Martin Frost, who had served Texas as a faithful Democrat for 26 years.  DeLay marginalized Frost’s old district by splitting it up, marginalizing the African-American vote and incorporating part of the district into Smokey Joe Barton’s district.

Unfortunately, DeLay’s gambit paid off.  In 2004, Martin Frost moved to the new 32nd Congressional District and took Pete Sessions on in one of the most expensive Congressional races in United States history.  Both sides spent over $4 million in a fight for this computer-drawn, pro-Republican district that incorporates most of WASP Dallas; including Highland Park – the former home for both Bush and Cheney.

Ultimately, Martin Frost received 44%of the vote, and the DeLay redistricting scheme had one of its four victims.  Two of the other DeLay victims, Nick Lampson and Chris Bell, are both figuring heavily into Texas politics this year.

Which brings us to Will Pryor

Will is a traditional Texas Democrat, which means that he believes that Texas belongs to all Texans, and that the government owes an obligation to its citizens to spend their money effectively – with minimal waste.  He is the son of a Presbyterian Minister, and his roots to the 32nd District go back to his childhood.

Mr. Pryor attended Yale as an undergrad, and was the Captain and MVP of the Yale Baseball Team (a distinction he shares with George H.W. Bush).  Following undergrad, he attended Harvard Law School, graduating in 1981.

Will has been honored by local publications for his advocacy and skills as an attorney, but service remains his calling.  In the 1980s, Will was one of the co-founders of the South Dallas Legal Clinic, a clinic providing legal services to those in need free of charge.  Will met his wife, Ellen, during this time when they were both providing volunteer legal services for the indigent in the Dallas area.  Ellen later became a Professor of Law at Southern Methodist University, where she emphasized to many a law student (myself included) the importance of not losing perspective of faith, service and community during the stress of law study and practice.

In the coming days, I intend to list the reasons why I think Will Pryor can do what Martin Frost could not.  To many this race appears quixotic….a nice race with no chance of change.  To the doubters’ credit, there is probably a good reason to think this is so.  The 2006 race in the 32nd does not have the firepower that the Frost/Sessions race had in 2004, and accordingly, Pryor’s campaign is working on a fraction of the warchest Frost had.  Additionally, Martin Frost spent over four million dollars and came away with only 44% of the vote.

However, this is a different year with different attitudes.  Will Pryor is a fiscal conservative with the kind of drive towards lifelong service and altruism that you cannot fake, or dress up for a political campaign.  Pete Sessions is a Conservative who is corrupt to the core, recently being named one of the most corrupt members of the 109th Congress by The Citizens for Ethics and Responsibility in Washington.

I asked my wife tonight if those 44% who voted for Martin Frost in 2004 would view the last two years of Republican failure and decide that they should vote for Pete Sessions this year.  The question is laughable… but the converse is not.  This race is not about converting half of the would-be Sessions voters to Pryor voters.  This race is about reaching out to those 6% of Sessions voters who have seen the last two years of corruption, of ties to Abramoff, and the utter lack of any real commitment from their representative in Washington, and presenting those voters with a moral candidate who lives his faith through service to his community.

The conventional wisdom in this race is that the 32nd District belongs to Sessions.  I refuse to believe that this is true.

a real guy (4.00 / 2)
I've been volunteering for Will since the beginning of the summer, and I must say that you're post is spot on!  Canvassing and attending DCDP events with him is a real hoot.  He's natural, honest - a real straight-talker.

Yes, Will can beat Sessions in November.  Gen. Wesley Clark is in town for a fundraiser with Will tonight, and that isn't nothing!

It's all about turnout in Dallas County, and the DCDP is pushing hard this election cycle.  Come November 8th, Pete Sessions will be looking for a job with a lobbying firm...no doubt.

Will and Dan (0.00 / 0)
Will's a good guy, but before we anoint him the Liberals' Last Best Hope, we should remember that he worked for Dan Morales, about whom many things can be said.  I'll leave it at Dan Morales was no friend of us liberals.

The untouchable Pete Sessions (0.00 / 0)
Unfortunately as stupid and as ineffective as Pete Sessions is, he is probably going to win reelection. Pryor's campaign is working hard, but I honestly do not think it's going to resonate with that district.

TX-32 is one of the "legal" gerrymandered districts the GOP laid out, just like TX-24. It's the only way Republicans will keep seats in the DFW area. Why do you think they drew them to encompass the burbs in the first place?

I hope Pryor wins but I'm not optimistic.

One question on Sessions and his untouchableness (0.00 / 0)
has there been anything big said about that ski trip?

like I said... (3.00 / 1)
it's all about turnout.  Republicans really don't have a reason to vote this November.  They're not angry like the Democrats.  I've been working my precinct pretty hard.  Being a Democratic Precinct Chair in North Dallas is a pretty lonely job.  But I figure if Ann Richards could do it, so can I!

even lonlier (0.00 / 0)
I've got you beat. Being a precinct chair in North Dallas in Southern Denton County is the lonliest job.

Some people in the party don't even know Dallas is in the county (as sad as that sounds). Though at least I recruited a counterpart in the precinct just below mine. A minority at that!

TX-32 looks like an upside down sickle (0.00 / 0)
Think about it. ;)

Pryor for Congress (0.00 / 0)
Will Pryor is a great guy and he will be a great congressman.  His resume speaks for itself.

I find it unfortunate, however, that our  press in Dallas has not focused on several things about his opponent, Pete Sessions.  It is indeed unfortunate that Sessions is such a lightweight.  His high schoolish approach to politics is nauseating.  One could go on and on about what pundits usually describe as a lack of gravitas.

But it is even more unfortunate that voters in the district do not know that Sessions has been named as one of the 20 "most corrupt" members of Congress by Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW).  This is not a partisan organization.

Sessions is right in there with the likes of Katherine Harris and other luminaries in the business of corruption. See http://citizensforet...

And for the full report on Sessions--his ties to Jack Abramoff and his ties to Promia, Inc., go to:

Will Pryor will do the people of the 32nd district and those of this nation a huge favor by taking this guy out.

I am sure hes a great guy and I hope he wins....but (0.00 / 0)
Does he have to appeal to the conservative voters of his district by agreeing with Jeb Hensarling?

Here is his published LTE to the DMN on the 22nd.

Agreed, kill off earmarks

Re: "Rep. Jeb Hensarling urges Congress to cut down on pork and pass earmark reform," Sept. 14 Viewpoints.

Mr. Hensarling is right. Congress must exercise more fiscal restraint, and I support his efforts to pass earmark reform.

It is deplorable that so many conservative members of Congress earmark pork-barrel projects while the federal debt skyrockets. As he points out, earmark legislation has more than tripled in the last decade, and cozy relationships between members of Congress and lobbyists are partly to blame.

We deserve better. I am a Democrat running for Congress in District 32 because, like Mr. Hensarling, I believe members should exercise fiscal responsibility and be held accountable.

My opponent, Rep. Pete Sessions, argues that fiscal responsibility can be achieved simply by cutting important programs, including those that help Americans pay for health care and education.

But before cutting, shouldn't Congress members account for their own pet projects?

Will Pryor, Dallas

Charlie Thompson is running against Jeb Hensarling to represent TX-05 in the US Congress.

We'll leave no district behind, because no district is hopeless.

That quote doesnt seem like it means very much.

Thanks Mr. Pryor, good luck.
