The Houston Chronicle issued a ringing endorsement of Senator Leticia Van de Putte in the race for Lieutenant Governor, stating that “The differences between the candidates this year could hardly be more stark.”

Let’s make sure Texas voters are paying attention.

It’s no surprise to see Senator Van de Putte rack up the endorsements of mainstream and independent entities — she is a respected stateswoman with a distinguished legislative career running against an erratic and extreme conservative who refuses to campaign publicly, let alone meet with editorial boards.

What’s impressive is the strength of the Chronicle’s backing of Van de Putte over hometown senator and former radio host Patrick.

The editorial board writes:

Van de Putte as lieutenant governor can be trusted to focus not on divisive social issues but on the issues that matter to the great majority of Texans: their children’s education, transportation and infrastructure, among them.

As a practicing pharmacist, she’s conversant with health care issues and would seek to find a way for Texas to expand Medicaid, thus bringing billions of tax dollars back to the state and reducing the inexcusable number of uninsured. Patrick and his GOP cohorts are opposed to expansion.

For Van de Putte to have any chance at all in this flame-red state, many Republican voters will have to split their tickets. If their primary concern is the future of this state and not party loyalty, that’s exactly what they’ll do in their choice for lieutenant governor. Van de Putte, we believe, is best for Texas.

Patrick is indeed an extreme conservative, and his approach to education, health care, and women’s health, among other issues, is not only out of touch with mainstream Texas opinion but also openly harmful to the people of our state. Patrick has taken to lying on the campaign trail, framing his vote for a budget that slashed $5.4 billion as a boon for education. It is alarming to think about what kind of legislation Dan Patrick would allow on the floor of the State Senate as Lieutenant Governor.

As the Houston Chronicle writes,

We urge a vote for Van de Putte. Texas voters, regardless of party, need to think long and hard about a potential demagogue becoming lieutenant governor.

Indeed. Share this endorsement and help spread the word: Leticia Van de Putte is the best choice for Lieutenant Governor.
