Democratic Candidate In HD 108 Admits To Being An Ex-Prostitute

by: Vince Leibowitz

Fri Feb 17, 2006 at 03:47 AM CST

I've always thought a number of the Republicans in the Lege were prostitutes for James Leininger, but it appears we Democrats have a bona fide ex-prostitute on the ballot: Tom Malin, candidate for State Rep in HD 108.

Turns out Malin, a salesman and former actor, once worked as a male escort. Malin faces Jack Borden in the primary to oust Republican Dan Branch.

But, before Republicans start complaining about Democrats' lack of moral fiber and all of that jazz, note that Malin (who was endorsed by the Dallas Tejano Democrats and the Dallas Morning News) says he has turned his life around and become a Christian. Nevertheless, in spite of the fact that at least half of the Republicans campaigning for or in the Texas House right now claim to be "born again Christians," and many Republicans are quite happy to mention their "born again" status, I'm sure the stone throwing will be starting soon.

At any rate, DMN notes:

Mr. Malin acknowledged Thursday that he once worked as a prostitute.

"I've made mistakes in my life, and I've stood before my Creator and I've accepted responsibility for my behavior," Mr. Malin said. "I've also accepted his grace and his redemption and his love and his forgiveness, and that's what important."

Web pages that have been used to advertise the sexual services of "Todd Sharpe" say he previously worked in the New York City and Los Angeles areas. His rates ranged from $200 to $600, according to graphically detailed reviews from men whom the pages described as satisfied customers.

Mr. Malin said he no longer works as a prostitute.

And, though the Dallas Morning News, which broke the story, doesn't list the site Malin once worked for under the alias of "Todd Sharpe", a quick bit of Googling with the name Todd Sharpe and "hot uninhibited," a phrase the DMN says was listed in the website, indicates Malin was on the site "Gayescortweb.com." And, though the site has evidently been taken down, Google maintains a cache of it here.

More DMN:

"I knew that if I continued on with that, I would die," Mr. Malin said. "God spoke to me, and I knew I had to make a different choice in life."

Mr. Malin, who was once a member of the Dallas Citizens Police Review Board, said he hoped his mistakes would not cost him a chance to serve in the Texas House. And he said he would remain in the race.

"I don't regret my past, nor do I wish to shut the door on my past," he said. "I think anyone who has made mistakes in their lives can be a viable member of community and society."

Although this is understandable (he should receive some sympathy from the GOP members of the House; about half of them proudly note they are "born again" Christians), it will no doubt cost him some votes.

...

"I know that there are people that can benefit from my experience," he said. "This is not about winning an election; this is about empowerment. There is a higher calling and a higher message involved in this."

All the "Todd Sharpe" Web sites are now defunct. The Dallas Morning News found archived versions online after receiving a tip this week that Mr. Malin might have worked in the sex industry.

The tipster, a fellow gay Democrat who knew the candidate, said he had heard rumors about Mr. Malin's past but had no direct knowledge. He said he feared that if Mr. Malin won a primary race next month and the rumors turned out to be true, their political party would be embarrassed. The tipster asked not to be identified because he didn't want to be dragged into a political fight.

Malin has been endorsed by the Dallas Tejano Democrats, who said they may reconsider their endorsement. The DMN also endorsed him, but has rescinded that, too:

"We were not aware of this, and he never mentioned it to us during the screening," said Domingo Garcia, chairman of the local Tejano Democrats. "Obviously we will have to reconsider our decision based on the new information."

The Dallas Morning News editorial board also recommended Mr. Malin, but in light of this new information, said it was reconsidering that recommendation.

His opponent in next month's Democratic primary is retired salesman Jack Borden, who said he was disappointed to learn of the revelation.

"I'm wondering who put him up to run in the first place," Mr. Borden said. "I don't approve of anybody selling their body."

Mr. Malin said the decision to run was his own.

Ex-Dallas County Democratic Chairwoman Susan Hays has a brighter take on things:

Former Dallas County Democratic chairwoman Susan Hays, a Malin supporter, said the candidate told her about his past in the buffet line of a local restaurant.

"He kind of amazed me," she said. "He's been a mess, but righted himself. He's got more honesty and energy than his Democratic opponent and Dan Branch."

Hey at least he wasnt pimpin himself for a $50 daytime special in the hooker ads in the Dallas Observer.

Don't ever say I'm tacky (0.00 / 0)
That was tacky. Funny. But tacky.

Why did DMN endorse him? Obviously there must be something about him that garnered him the endorsement, albeit questionable, of DMN. What is his political experience? Obviously he has more than just satisfied customers backing him. That or someone needs to check the old credit card records of the DMN editorial board.

More importantly, how has his opponent resonded to this?

Lots of people have been hookers. Lots of professional people who needed to cover tuition and their bills while in school.  Easy to look down on it.  But it is reality for some. That said, all know the risk they take down the road.

I would have some concern if he had been a drug dealer. Although some would say there is no difference.

Reality is his political career is probably finished.

How did DMN happen upon this after they had endorsed him?  Doesn't reflect well on them if you ask me.  They endorse him then expose him.

Not the first one.... (1.00 / 1)

Smith Co. Sheriff Once Sold Mary Kay (0.00 / 0)
On his Website, J.B. Smith, the controversial Sheriff of Smith County who was removed from office decades ago and won his seat back, bragged that he was the best male Mary Kay salesman in Texas. He sold it after he got ousted to raise money for his campaign, and evidently did it on a dare.

And the burning question (0.00 / 0)
But did he get a pink Cadillac?  And more importantly, did he drive it?

Real men eat quiche.  And drive pink Cadillacs. In my opinion anyway.

Anyone who can sell that much Mary Kay and get a pink Cadillac obviously has something going for them.  Particularly if they drive it.

Wonder if Tom Malin got one?

According to the dmn, page 16a, 2nd column, "a fellow gay democrat  had heard rumors about Mr. Malins past but had no direct knowledge of it, the tipster (snitch) wished to remain un-named as he didn't want to get dragged into a political fight, HUH! doesn't sound like everything is blissful in stonewall land.

Susan Hays comments about DCDP issues (0.00 / 0)
What REALLY irks me is that anytime there is something going on in DCDP, The media always seeks out Susan Hays, for a response and a comment. Susan Hays is not the spokesperson for DCDP, hasn't been since her questionable ethics got her backed into a corner.Only after she realized that her support was practcally non-exisitent did she resign,I have always been cordial and courteous to Ms. Hays, but that doesn't mean that I like her. I'm still pissed about the $25,000 that DCDP had to pay the IRS, there are democrat candidates out there that could have used that money.

As a member of the DCDP Advisory Board, I have had a chance to see the party go from floundering during Susan Hays reign, to healing under Theresa Daniels leadership while she was Temporary Chair, to flourishing under Darlene Ewing,  tom madrzykowski

Stuff (0.00 / 0)
The Dallas Morning News endorsement of Tom Malin in the Democratic Primary was so negative that Malin couldn't possibly have used it in his campaign. They just think his opponent, Jack Borden, is a communist.

There is no question that when the time comes, they will write a gushing endorsement of the evil Dan Branch. But by that time, DMN endorsements will have lost what little credibility they previously had.

A little sabotage perhaps (0.00 / 0)
Sounds to me like maybe they are endorsing the worst of the Democratic primary candidates to make it easier for the Republicans to win in November.

Tom Malin should have remembered Jeff Gannon before filing for office. Once on the internet, always on the internet.

Personally the "born again Christian" bothers me more the more I think about it.

2004 Republican Candidate (0.00 / 0)

Is this any worse than 2004 Republican State House candidate Sam Walls?

From the Texas Observer: "About a week before the Walls-Orr runoff on April 13, a collection of photos began showing up in the county and in e-mails to news outlets from Dallas/Fort Worth to Austin. The photos show Walls, a tall, stately looking man, wearing understated makeup, bouffant wigs, jewelry, and expensive, conservative women’s outfits. In one of the photos, he looks strangely like his wife, Kay, who sports a big smile and the same hairstyle."
