Let's Bury Gene Kelly Once and For All

by: Meredith Adams, Courage for Congress

Fri Aug 11, 2006 at 02:56 PM CDT

(We'll, one Gene Kelly is already buried... - promoted by Karl-Thomas Musselman)

The re-drawing of Congressional District 21 last week has pushed John Courage's campaign into the open election stage, and today perennial candidate Gene Kelly filed to run against him. Please support John today in defeating Kelly!

You might remember Kelly as the infamous challenger to Barbara Ann Radnofsky that caused her to get into an expensive run-off in April.  Prior to that, Kelly had made several other ineffective runs for U.S. Senate, but refused to actually campaign.  Instead, Kelly swindles votes out of “name recognition,” but not recognition received from his own successes but rather from the successes of actor Gene Kelly, who starred in Singin’ in the Rain in the 1950s and died ten years ago!

Even more cringe-worthy, on February 17, 2006, Kelly told the Houston Chronicle that he refuses to spend any money on his races.  “If somebody sends me a dollar, I send it back,” he said in a rare interview.  Sadly enough, Kelly’s platform of “name recognition” does get him some votes.  The run-off between him and Radnofsky proves this, and was a drain on her campaign’s funds.

Furthermore, it was reported in the Chronicle that Kelly “shuns invitations to appear at candidate forums and bypasses opportunities to lay out his campaign ideas.”  He balked at the newspaper’s suggestion that, as a candidate, he may have a responsibility to partake in a dialogue with voters!

Compare this to John Courage, who has campaigned tirelessly for over a year and a half, traveling his district far and wide to meet face-to-face with voters and discuss their concerns.  In March, John left his full-time job in order to devote more time to his campaign.

Kelley has shown Texans time and time again that he has no desire to lead, and he has made it clear that the only intention that led him to file for candidacy is to disrupt the democratic process and, in the process, gain attention for himself.

Now, Kelly has set out to disrupt John’s race.  But Team Courage has been waging a serious battle against Lamar Smith for far too long to see everything we’ve built up be halted by a nuisance like Gene Kelly.

Please join Team Courage in defeating Kelly in the open election by using our new online tools and donating today! Let’s let Kelly know that we won’t be intimidated by his childish ploys for attention.

We need "sore loser" law in Texas (3.00 / 1)
Just like they have in Ohio.  Any candidate who has already lost a race for one seat (TX-Senate this year) should not be allowed to run again in the same election cycle. He shouldn't be on the ballot until 2008. Let's find us a Texas House Legislature that can help us get a similar law on the books.  We can call it the Gene Kelly law.

If Kelly want to give his money away, there are much better causes that could use it.

Hopefully you all won't be distracted that badly by Gene Kelly (0.00 / 0)
After all, there's a much more prominent opponent for you guys to target.

therein lies the problem... (3.00 / 1)
John now has to spend money to let people know who Gene Kelly really is. That cuts down on resources to go after Lamar.

[ Parent ]
Don't you think that if he spent money to let people know who he was (0.00 / 0)
then he can go after Lamar and cruise ahead of Kelly at the same time?

[ Parent ]
Logically, yes... (3.00 / 1)
In reality, no. Just as any of the candidates that have had to deal with Kelly over the years.

We have the tool to defeat Gene Kelly (NO COST) (0.00 / 0)
You are right. Let us bury Gene Kelly once and for all.

Here is the plan:

All volunteers need to go to and register on

TrueBlueAction.com

We need to conduct the THREE QUESTION POLL for John Courage.

The 21st District precinct information
• Bandera – all of the county
• Blanco  – all of the county
• Comal  – all of the county
• Kendall  – all of the county
• Kerr  – all of the county
• Real  – all of the county
• Bexar - partial
• Travis - partial

The volunteers call the voters of the 21st Congressional District to conduct the three question poll THEN explain Gene Kelly is dead and a vote for him is a vote for the Republicans.

This would give each voter a personal contact and contribute data that would be available to ALL Texas Democratic Candidates on the ballot in the polled areas.

You should be really, really careful (0.00 / 0)
about how you go about explaining that Gene Kelly is "dead." Any ambiguity at all, any doubts at all raised as to which Gene Kelly is being talked about, can raise ugly questions about voter fraud. I'm just sayin'

Let's go to the giant map of Texas for a moment (0.00 / 0)
the map from the first round of the BAR/Kelly/Hunter primary

You'll see that Kelly pretty much got swept in TX-21.

Kelly's strongholds were in areas with a decent amount of Democrats who also hadn't heard of Barbara Ann Radnofsky. In areas which enough Democrats who looked into the election, and maybe the areas of Texas that BAR paid attention to, she was able to win.

Granted, that primary is an example of what happens to a candidate who has poor name recognition.

The only way Kelly is a factor is if he finishes second and Smith finishes below 50%.

If the results are 55 Smith/38 Courage/17 Smith, there's not a lot of blame that could go to Kelly. If it's around the same results as the Stockman/Lampson/Geraldine Sam race, then there's reason for some frustration. But I don't think things are quite that good.

A lot of this is like staring at the rabbit when you're deerhunting. You're not going to get the job done if you're distracted that easily.

Hermano... (0.00 / 0)
Rad won in the old district that included a lot of Travis County. The change in the map makes this a different race.

[ Parent ]
Eh (0.00 / 0)
I was looking at the counties that I know are in the new district, and I'm pretty sure BAR won them all.

Gene Kelly and the urban myths of Texas politics (0.00 / 0)
Please God smite the lap top of the next whiner to log on any Texas blog to blame a fictitious phantom candidate for their woes.  Listen voters are not that dumb, in fact voters are pretty smart (unless you consider whom ever started this thread to be a voter the exception to prove the rule I guess) Gene Kelly has done well when the opponents had nothing to say and no ability to put a real campaign together.

The world is not fair ok?  Get over it.  If Courage supporters have to factor in Kelly stealing “his” votes then really John has no shot at winning anyways.  Not a single voter who thinks there is a real choice between Lamar and John will cast their vote for Gene.  Not one.  If you want to win you need a message. Ok?  A message that compels voters to your side.  One that motivates them to vote for your side.

Worrying about Gene Kelly demonstrates that your campaign has no message and thus you really should worry about Gene Kelly.

Yeah, there is that... (3.00 / 2)
but what you either don't realize or are willfully ignoring is that with the change in the map it IS a much tight race. The redraw made this a district that heavily favors Smith. John can still win but he need to pull a lot of R's and he has to have a sweep of the D's. Kelly makes it that much tougher.

You must be the guy who beats his kid if they don't score perfectly on the SAT.

Whether any of us like it or not, there ARE going to be some people Courage won't be able to reach that will end up voting for Kelly based on recog. In a race like this he can't afford to lose any. Get it now?

[ Parent ]
Umm, TIGHTER? (0.00 / 0)
Before, this race was a huge stretch.  Now, do you really think it tightened?  I'd tend to argue the exact opposite, now it's a very safe seat for Lamar Smith and there aren't enough persuadeable voters for Courage to have any path to victory.  So, honestly, it's VERY good Gene Kelly is in this race, it keeps him out of other ones.  Can you imagine the outrage if he ran against Rep. Doggett?

[ Parent ]
No, it really wasn't... (0.00 / 0)
Yeah, I'll disagree with you. Courage had an excellent shot in the old district. Sure it wasn't going to be easy but it was winnable. The change in the district obviously hurt and now comes the coup de grace courtesy Gene Kelly's ego.

[ Parent ]
I think you're onto something (0.00 / 0)
This is hardly the first time in Texas that a candidate has tried to coast on his famous name.  The difference seems to be that Gene Kelly is far more successful than the others, because the voters have always smoked them out.  How else can you explain the electoral losses of M.D. Anderson in Houston?  And how does Kelly manage to survive?  Suggestions that his strength is in areas not seriously campaigned to by other Democrats, seem close to the mark.

Courage should just focus on Lamar Smith in his campaign, and let the insecure bloggers worry about Kelly.  Worrying about Smith is plenty of work all by itself.

If, in a worst case scenario... (0.00 / 0)
Kelly did get elected, would he even know it?

Name Recognition (0.00 / 0)
Realistically, I wouldn't be surprised if a good number of the voters in the 21st District believe Lamar Smith is a forty-something African-American who used to play fullback for the Saints.

Courage???????????????????????? (1.00 / 1)
Courage is in third, may drop to 4th.  Waste of money.
Needs to get a resume, as his sux.

So (0.00 / 0)
does anybody know any Richard Perry's who could run in TX-21? Hahaha.. just messing around there.
