Help Support Democracy in Illinois by Acting in Texas!

by: Colin Kalmbacher

Tue Aug 08, 2006 at 07:39 PM CDT

In the wake of common sense, economic justice and plain ole democracy triumphing in Chicago, Illinois, big business has stepped up to the plate in an effort to derail a progressive triumph once again.

In Chicago, the city council recently OK'd a resolution that mandated 'Big Box' retailers pay their employees a "living wage" of $10 per hour.

Target, the up-scale Wal-Mart on the cutting edge of  Women hating has threatened to tie the much-needed legislation up with litigation.

This victory, largely due to the efforts of the Chicago chapter of ACORN is now in jeopardy, and there is something we here in Austin can do about it.

This Thursday join Austin-area ACORN organizers and other community activists in demanding that Target respect the democratic process in Illinois.

An as of now, un-specified local-area Target will be targeted as we issue our demands in a forceful, yet tempered fashion.

This event will not be a media circus and as such, will largely consist of (hopefully) an impromptu meeting with the general manager of the to-be disclosed Target store. We will attempt to force her hand to her fax machine so that she might submit a memo to Target's corporate offices detailing the support that exists for a living wage across the country.

But hell, we might just throw a pie in her face and skeedaddle.

I apologize for the scant details, but this news just fell into my lap this afternoon. Be gentle.

I'm just trying to drum up some support and interest from the community.

For the scoop from someone who is a bit more in the know, then please contact ACORN organizer (and former UT-SG presidential candidate) Michael Litt at:
