Two Weeks In, the #TacoOrBeerChallenge is Making Delicious Waves

Two weeks ago, RH Reality Check writer and reproductive rights activist Andrea Grimes started the #TacoOrBeerChallenge. The challenge, which started as a joke on twitter, has turned into an international push to eat tacos, drink beer, and donate to abortion funds.

From Ireland to Mexico and from sea to shining sea, people are documenting their culinary adventures and their donations to abortion funds. The #TacoOrBeerChallenge has even garnered celebrity participants.

.Martha Plimpton, Dan Savage, and Sarah Paulson have gotten in on the challenge, each taking to social media to explain why they are eating tacos (or, in the case of Paulson, a delicious-looking doughnut)and making donations to abortion funds.

Grimes celebrated the first two weeks of the #TacoOrBeerChallenge with a video of her own, this time, without a taco:

From the video:

I’ve been talking with my friends at abortion funds both nationally and internationally, and they tell me that they have seen big increases in donations since the #TacoOrBeerChallenge started, and that is all down to y’all.

Looking at the tumblr and the twitter feed, it really isn’t hard to believe:

Texas lawmakers have gotten in on the fun:

As well as Burnt Orange Report staff writers:

And everyone in between. Even if it seems like everything is all tacos, beer, fun, and games, this challenge is making a real difference. Grimes continues, from her video update:

For example, the Texas Equal Access Fund says that they’ve raised $1000 in just under a couple of weeks. The National Network of Abortion Funds has seen an increase in first time donors.

Out in Mexico City, the MARIA Fund for Social Justice actually made it into some national newspaper coverage, which is all just incredible.

Another important thing is happening through all of these videos and pictures of people eating tacos: celebrities and regular people alike are publicly challenging the stigma surrounding abortions. By participating in the #TacoOrAbortionChallenge and asking their friends to do the same, participants are doing their part to normalize access to abortion services and the people who need them. And that is a revolution in and of itself.

Finally, as Grimes concludes, it is also about the financial impact this is having on abortion funds around the world. “We’re not just talking about hundreds of dollars that has been raised over the past couple of weeks,” Grimes said, “we’re talking about thousands of dollars.” And it isn’t over yet!

We can do so, so, so much more, if only you will sacrifice a taco or a beer and make a donation to an abortion fund. So, get on it!
