Do You Like Tacos, Beer, and Abortion Funds? The #TacoOrBeerChallenge Is For You!

If you have been anywhere near the internet this week, you’ve probably heard of the #IceBucketChallenge. This truly viral campaign has done an amazing job and raised millions of dollars for an important cause.

But, while you’re watching Kirk Watson and Leticia Van de Putte get doused in ice cold water, do you know what you could be doing? Eating a taco, drinking a beer, and donating to a local abortion fund. Enter: #TacoOrBeerChallenge

I could explain the advent of the #TacoOrBeerChallenge to you, but I wouldn’t do it nearly as well as the founder herself, Andrea Grimes:

The taco or beer challenge is a Twitter joke turned fundraising call, inspired in part by the ice bucket challenge that has gone so well for (much-needed) ALS research. Because getting a bucket of ice dumped on your head sounds sort of miserable (even in 100-degree Texas heat … and perhaps less than ideal in our drought conditions) but eating tacos and drinking beer sounds pretty awesome, I figured: why not challenge people to do the awesome thing and donate to abortion funds, too? It’s a challenge because it is so not at all a challenge–and it’s a good way to reduce stigma for folks who might hesitate to give money directly to abortion funds. I do think that’s a big step–going from, say, donating to Planned Parenthood to actually paying for part of a stranger’s abortion. But it feels so good to know that you’ve helped someone access safe, legal health care. I’ve found, over the years, that the more I donate to abortion funds, the better I feel every time I do it–sort of like the way I feel every time I have a cold beer and a taco.

Though the #TacoOrBeerChallenge originated in the Lone Star State, folks across the country have accepted the challenge and funded both Texan funds and local organizations funding abortion access in their states. From Vermont to Arizona and beyond, people are taking the internet to eat a taco, drink a beer, and donate money to abortion funds. Check out Mikey, who took the #TacoOrBeerChallenge to support women in Ireland – where abortion is illegal:

Sound like something you’d like to do? Grimes tells you exactly how to get involved:

To be clear on how the “challenge” works – literally the only thing you really HAVE to do to complete the challenge is donate to an abortion fund. The beers and the tacos are totally optional, just EXTREMELY ENCOURAGED because I think people should treat themselves to nice things sometimes, and beer and tacos are nice. Plus it can be pretty funny-slash-gross to watch folks eat tacos, which makes for good photo and video opportunities. So, to recap: drink a beer (ginger beer counts! ale counts! oh hell, we’ll take a margarita too!) and/or eat a taco, and donate to an abortion fund. Then tell everyone about it. BAM YOU WON THE CHALLENGE.

What started as a joke online has grown into an opportunity to reduce stigma around abortion funds, drink a beer, and eat a taco. From the folks here at Burnt Orange Report, we challenge you! If you want to, that is. Because this challenge is all about choice.
