Democracy for America Endorses Democrat Sameena Karmally in HD-89

This week, HD-89 Democrat Sameena Karmally received a major endorsement from Democracy for America, the national progressive political organization that was founded by Howard Dean. The endorsement brings a national spotlight–and the possibility for funding–to one of the Texas Legislature's most important races.

Karmally is running to replace HD-89 incumbent Jodie “Rape Kit” Laubenberg, who is infamous for her comments equating rape kits with abortion. Laubenberg is also the author of the abortion bill that was filibustered by Wendy Davis last summer. Karmally, who BOR profiled in April, is hoping to capitalize on the movement started by Wendy Davis to oust one of the Texas House's most conservative and destructive incumbents.

DFA's endorsement sheds much-needed light on Karmally's candidacy. It is a sign that people are noticing her–and not just in Texas.

Read DFA's statement and Sameena Karmally's response after the jump. Franco Caliz, Democracy for America's Electoral Campaigns Manager, had the following to say about Sameena Karmally:

“Democracy for America members couldn't be more excited to help Sameena Karmally end the State House career of Jodie Laubenberg, the author of the anti-woman bill that Sen. Wendy Davis so valiantly struggled against.  Texas voters deserve smart, progressive leaders like Sameena in Austin who will fight to make sure that the Lone Star State works for all Texans, not just the extremists who want to turn it into a laboratory for right-wing legislation.”

Sameena Karmally also released a statement on DFA's support for her campaign:

“It's an honor to be endorsed by one of the largest and most influential grassroots organizations in the country. Together, Democracy for America and I will make sure working families in Texas have a leader in Austin who will fight for education dollars, support small businesses, and protect basic government services to keep our citizens and our economy strong.”

Democracy for America has over 40,000 members in Texas. As a whole, the organization has raised millions of dollars and made millions of phone calls in support of progressive candidates nationwide. DFA's support will give Sameena Karmally momentum going forward, and help equip her with the tools to defeat Jodie Laubenberg come November.
