Dancing Behind Bars? Tom DeLay Heads Back to Court

by: Emily Cadik

Ever since his money laundering and conspiracy convictions were dismissed, Tom DeLay has been living the good life. He joined Dancing with the Stars. He wrote a book comparing liberals to Holocaust-deniers, white supremacists and even Hitler himself. He made his rounds on the talk shows demanding to see President Obama's birth certificate. But now it's time to face the music, and DeLay is heading back to court.

Though DeLay was found guilty on charges of conspiracy and money laundering and handed a three-year prison sentence in 2011, the 3rd Court of Appeals dismissed them last fall due to "legally insufficient evidence." Last week, though, the Texas Criminal Court of Appeals agreed to reopen the case.

There's more after the jump.

It's been almost a decade since DeLay was first convicted. As a refresher, DeLay raised money through a PAC for his preferred candidates for the Texas legislature, but could not give the money directly to the candidates. So he wrote a check of $190,000 to the RNC with a list of "suggestions" for which candidates should receive the money. DeLay's lawyers argued that the scheme did not amount to money laundering because the amount was given by check, and not in cash - no, really. But the defense was still victorious when the guilty verdict was dismissed.

DeLay's defense team is ready for another fight, and has been making statements that range from confident to deranged. DeLay's defense attorney Brian Wice said of Travis County District Attorney Rosemary Lehmberg, "We will ultimately see who the best litigator is. Send Rosemary down. I'll beat her like a rented goalie." It's safe to say we can expect a spirited trial.

Other than that, it's hard to know what to expect. The court is very Republican, but also very pro-prosecution. There is also no date for the hearing set at this time.

But it's nice to have Tom DeLay back in our lives - and back in court, instead of in dance pants.
