Longview, Texas Pays Ted Nugent $16,250 Not To Perform at Fourth of July Owing to Controversy

It turns out that rockers who sing about child sexual assault don't make for good family-friendly entertainment on the 4th of July.

The City of Longview, which was in discussion with Ted Nugent to have the rocker and controversial Greg Abbott supporter perform on the Fourth of July, has cancelled the appearance and paid Nugent half of his fee to not show up.

The controversy arose when Greg Abbott, the Republican nominee for Governor, took Nugent on the trail with him. Nugent is known for his exceedingly racist statements about President Barack Obama, as well as his song lyrics about child rape, and his alarming history of threatening violence to minorities, women, and anyone with divergent world views.

Make no bones about it: the controversy Nugent caused while on the campaign trail with Abbott was the reason Longview chose to cancel. From the Longview News-Journal:

City spokesman Shawn Hara said the campaign-trail controversy was just one of several factors that led to the city pulling the plug.

"(There were) a variety of reasons. Cost, structure, is it the right musical act for this type of event - a city-sponsored, family-oriented overall event," Hara said. "They decided no, we don't want to move forward, it is not the right act for this. At that point we decided to end discussions."

[Mayor Jim] Dean said the city manager's office contacted him with concerns about the possibility of contracting with Nugent.

"That didn't really fit what we trying to put together, a family oriented program ... and I confirmed with his thoughts that that probably wasn't the right act," he said. "And I still feel that it was the right decision. It just didn't fit with what we were trying to put together."

Meanwhile, Greg Abbott has yet to disavow his relationship with Ted Nugent. Nugent also continues to serve as Sid Miller's treasurer in his race for Agriculture Commissioner. Looks like the Texas Republican Party still has a Ted Nugent problem.
