Republican Rep. Stefani Carter Caused Car Crash She Compared To War

State Rep. Stefani Carter

In late January, North Texas State Rep. Stefani Carter was leaving a shopping center in Addison. She took a left without looking, and crashed her car into that of a young man named Rolando Cerezo. He was seriously injured, and is still unable to stand up or sit down for long periods of time due to severe back and neck pain. Carter has denied fault repeatedly while refusing to discuss details, but the now-full police report shows her to be at fault in the way so described.

"I didn't see her coming," Cerezo told the Dallas Morning News. "You're not expecting someone coming out of a shopping center to come straight across like that. You think they are going to watch both ways before coming on the road." Cerezo's life was on the line after the crash, and he is grateful it wasn't worse. "My face could've been crushed," he said.

At a debate against her three primary opponents one day after the crash, Carter compared her experience in the crash to her wounded veteran opponent's experience in war.

Yup. Story continues below the jump.

Calling the crash she said she didn't cause "life-altering," she claimed it made her ask questions such as "What is the purpose of life?" and "Do you love what you do?". Then, gesturing to the veteran Sam Brown, she said: "I know that our colleague here, Sam Brown, understands that."

"I will tell you that I have come away again saying that I do love the Legislature. And I love serving as your conservative voice in House District 102," Rep. Carter said she concluded.

Repulsed yet? Carter knew she caused a crash that severely injured another person and tried to score political points from it. How depraved can you go?

Brown didn't comment for some time until a statement that week calling Carter's remark "disrespectful, not to me, but to the thousands of other men and women who have been awarded the Purple Heart as a result of wounds suffered in a true act of service." He continued: "It is disgraceful to compare a minor, at-fault fender bender to the life threatening sacrifices made by so many soldiers who have been wounded during battle."

It's hard to draw distinctions in a GOP primary when each candidate is claiming to be the most like Ted Cruz. It just got a lot easier in this one.
