Burnt Orange Report endorses Stephen Brown for Railroad Commissioner, owing to his energy and ideas that will move the agency forward.
The railroad commission has nothing to do with railroads — it regulates the oil and gas industry. Brown wants to make sure the commission balances the needs of regular working Texans and their concerns about safety, private property rights, and the environment.
Brown also will focus on making the commission a “functional, twenty-first century state agency,” and is well suited to leveraging the millions recently appropriated by the legislature to update technology and improve the functionality of the office.
Brown has previously worked on campaigns and in legislative offices of Democrats including Congresswoman Sheila Jackson-Lee, State Rep. Sylvester Turner, and former U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk. Brown has also been an outstanding chair of the Fort Bend Democratic Party, and can give Democrats the opportunity to make serious inroads in the populous suburban county this cycle. The diverse, rapidly growing county serves as a microcosm for contemporary Texas, and Brown's experience there will prepare him well to serve the needs of an ever-diversifying constituency.
We appreciate Dale Henry's willingness to place his name on the ballot as a statewide candidate. However, Brown offers the better choice for Democratic voters, and will likely prove to be the stronger statewide candidate this fall.
