The Dallas County Democratic Party Executive Committee met on January 23. The main order of business was the selection of officers to organize the Senate District Conventions this year. (See article above for list.) They also elected Mark Baker to fill the vacant Alternate position on the Advisory Council from HD100. Several persons were elected to fill vacant Precinct Chair positions. (Those are subject to verification of precinct number and so on before being posted on the website.)

Elected officials present included Larry Duncan (Dallas County School Board), District Clerk Gary Fitzsimmons, County Treasurer Joe Wells, Judge Tina Yoo Clinton, and Judge Andy Chatham, as well as SDEC members Janice Schwarz, Michael McPhail, Steve Tillery, James White, Jeff Strater, and David Griggs. Candidates present included Darlene Ewing (County Chair), David Bradley (for County Treasurer), Michael Fjetland (for US Senate), Lawrence J. Praeger (for 301st Family Dist. Judge), Paul K. Stafford (for State Rep. HD 115), Susan E. Anderson (for 291st Judicial Dist.), Melissa Bellan (for JP 5 – 1), Felicia Pitre (for District Clerk), Milton Whitley (for St. Rep. HD 113), Heath Harris (for County Chair), and Tarsha Hardy (for District Clerk).

In Memory: Kathryn Williams

Kathryn Marie Williams passed away last week after an illness. A graduate of Booker T. Washington High School (Class of 1949), she was a long-time Precinct Chair / Election Judge in Dallas County. Her service to the people of Dallas and Dallas County and to the Democratic Party were of the highest order. She will be well-deservedly missed and her absence lamented for many years to come. A wake was held Sunday, January 26 at Black and Clark Funeral Home, and funeral services on Monday, January 27, at Warren Avenue Christian Church, Dallas.

In Memory: Adelfa Callejo

The long-time civil rights activist, litigator, demonstrator, and mentor and inspiration to many elected and appointed officials and others, passed away Saturday. More info on her impressive life here. A public viewing will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday, January 29, at Sparkman/Hillcrest Funeral Home, 7405 W. Northwest Highway. A rosary will then be recited at 7 p.m. At 10 a.m. on this Thursday, January 30, Bishop Kevin Farrell will celebrate a funeral Mass at the Cathedral Shrine of the Virgin of Guadalupe, 2215 Ross Ave., Dallas.

Who's Running For Office?

All the candidates who have filed with us in Dallas County for public office for the 2014 Democratic Primary have been posted at this page. There will be 39 contests for public office voted on in Dallas County in the primary next March 4. Statewide and local candidates who have filed in both parties are shown on the Secretary of State's website at this page. (Choose Dallas County on the drop-down menu.)

Who's Endorsed Which Candidates?

The Democratic Party does not make endorsements in Primary contests. (Our Rules prohibit it.) Some Democratic clubs and organizations do endorse. Some Precinct Chairs and elected or party officials do as well, but only as individuals, not as officers of the party. Unofficially, SDEC member James White has once again this year compiled a spreadsheet (updated as he hears of more) of all the endorsements he knows of in primary contests, from clubs and organizations, officials and officers, and even the News. You can check it out for fun as a GoogleDoc at this page, but be aware: several groups still haven't endorsed yet, and very often candidates win despite having few or no endorsements. Voters make up their own minds, and rightly so.

Who's Running For Precinct Chair?

Those who have filed for Precinct Chair are listed at this page. There will be ten contests in the primary. The term of our current Precinct Chairs goes through the June 2014 Executive Committee meeting. At that time the newly elected Precinct Chairs will be sworn in. (The current list, as of December 16, is at this page.)

If no one got filed in a precinct, due to ice storms or whatever, that meeting can elect people to fill the next two year term. Usually if an incumbent who missed the filing deadline still wishes to continue in the office, the other Chairs will elect them to fill the vacancy in their precinct.
