Friday Wrap: Beyonce on Gender Equality, Reproductive Rights in Israel, and More...

by: Burnt Orange Report

It's Friday! Time for your Burnt Orange Reporters to close some browser tabs and touch on the issues of the week.

We hope you're surviving the cedar fever that's been hitting pretty hard. Just throwing this out there, but a good way to get us through this would be Veruca Salt reuniting, coming to Austin, performing a parody of the song below entitled "Cedar," and everyone at the show getting a free steroid shot. Who's in?

Below the jump, read about state Rep Armando Walle's new baby, the surprising correlation between the MTV show "Teen Mom" and birth rates, how to explain white privilege to a broke white person, and more.

"We need to stop buying into the myth about gender equality. It isn't a reality yet." Beyoncé wants to talk to you about equal pay in her piece, "Gender Equality is a Myth!" from the new Shriver Report: A Woman's Nation Pushes Back From the Brink. (Check it out on Pitchfork and get her brilliant commentary on sexuality and motherhood as a bonus.) So, does this mean we can pass an equal pay bill in Texas now? Queen Bey has spoken, y'all.

A recent study showed a correlation between higher Nielsen ratings for "Teen Mom" shows and lower teen birth rates. Additionally, Internet searches and tweets about birth control and abortion spiked when new episodes aired.

In Texas, where there is separation between church and state abortion is a political issue used by the religious right to deny economic and personal freedom, but in Israel where there is no separation the government sees it as a health issue and relies on medical data. Starting this year, "Israel will pay for all approved abortions for women aged 20 to 33, thanks to a recommendation accepted by its health ministry."

Congrats to State Rep Armando Walle and his wife, whose son Joaquin was born this week! Hopefully next session he will be able to get his bill passed to protect the rights of breastfeeding mothers.

"Explaining White Privilege to a Broke White Person" breaks down privilege in relation to the intersection of peoples' lived experiences in a way for those who may be resistant to recognize their own privilege, such as economically disadvantaged white people, to understand that privilege has nothing to do with having to suffer with guilt or shame and not recognizing hard work, but more about understanding how others have to work harder to gain the things that they themselves might take for granted.
