| This is a political blog, so why should people here discuss things like sports, music or other “irrelevant” things? Well, yesterday there was a great example of this over at Daily Kos. There was some discussion, on an “open thread”, of Floyd Landis’s incredible comeback from 11th place to 3rd in one day of amazing, superhuman cycling. The man made up ten minutes in one day. We discussed our admiration for this feat – how inspiring it was, etc. I say talking about our common interests besides progressive politics makes us a better team. We understand each other better, we find out people’s talents (RepublicanTaliban wrote a description of the stage that will give you chills even if you’re not a cycling fan) and our interests in the world at large keep us connected to what we’re fighting for. As I’ve seen discussed in yet another forum, with the Tour de France riding so many stages on coastal areas, they might have to make some route changes in coming years if we don’t get our environmental act together.
There's a poll inside. |
| Also, as mentioned by more than one person in the discussion, falling behind keeps you humble and makes you re-focus. Seeing someone like Landis come back from so far down reminds us to never give up. Like some candidates I could name, he was out of the race, with no chance whatsoever. Washed up, done, stick a fork in him. Today, they’re talking about how much he’s going to win the race by.
Watching the stage last night, I could see the fire in his eyes, the absolute determination. This stage was his. He didn’t listen to the people who said he was out. Or maybe he did and used it to inspire him. As asimbagirl said in the discussion: “This is how we should be approaching all upcoming challenges, from fundraising to elections. The obstacles we face are nothing compared to what Floyd faced, and he took them on fast, furious, and without a second thought.”
Of course, there are also examples in the same discussion of how these threads can go terribly wrong. Name-calling and sniping at each other is not going to help us win in November. Just my humble opinion here, but shouldn’t we save arguments for matters of substance? And how about remembering who the enemy actually is? (hint – it ain’t someone who’s voting for the Democrats).
So - what are you interested in? What would you get up at 7:30 on a Saturday morning to watch or do? (the broadcast of Sunday's final stage starts at 6:30 am!) When you're not arguing good-naturedly about politics, what else are you arguing about? And what did I leave off the poll? |
