Cop Kills Texas College Student At Traffic Stop

by: Ben Sherman

Tue Dec 10, 2013 at 09:00 AM CST

A beloved Texas college student is dead today after an apparent reckless killing by a San Antonio police officer. Early Friday morning, Cpl. Christopher Carter pulled over University of the Incarnate Word senior Robert Cameron Redus. It appears a short struggle occurred between the two. Then, Carter pulled out his gun and "emptied" it into Redus.

"I didn't hear him say anything like, 'Get down on your hands and knees,' you know? I didn't hear him say anything. He just started shooting," a witness said. "He emptied the gun on him," he said. "Boom, boom, boom. Six shots - five or six."

On Saturday, Incarnate students held a campus vigil for Redus. On Monday, the tragedy made national news.

"He was an honor student, dean's list every semester, incredibly intelligent," Redus' friend Annie Jones said. "So, so, so smart. He was our co-valedictorian in high school...Cameron was the sweetest, kindest, gentlest person. So compassionate."

Cpl. Carter has been placed on administrative leave while an investigation into the killing proceeds. What could Redus have possibly been doing if he had the wherewithal to ask Carter if he was going to use his gun?

"We are understandably devastated by the death of our dear son Cameron and we ask for your prayers as we deal with our tragic loss," the Redus family said in a statement.

We've become accustomed to police brutality in this country. From pepper-spraying student Occupy protesters to home invasions on false/frivolous drug charges. Complacency is a mistake; a culture of "act first, think later" -- as similarly embodied in the murderous "Stand Your Ground" laws -- leads to apparent senseless killings like this one.
