Ted Cruz released his Canadian birth certificate today. He did it to further support his argument that he's eligible to run for president because of his mother's American citizenship.
"Senator Cruz became a U.S. citizen at birth, and he never had to go through a naturalization process after birth to become a U.S. citizen," said spokeswoman Catherine Frazier, who previously held the same position for Rick Perry. "To our knowledge, he never had Canadian citizenship, so there is nothing to renounce."
That "to our knowledge" is interesting, because it is a blatant lie. Canada has birthright citizenship, just like the U.S. If Cruz was born in Canada, immigration experts confirm, he is a Canadian by birth as well. And if he has never renounced his Canadian citizenship, as Frazier confirms, he is still a Canadian. The Cruz team can argue that his mother's American citizenship means he is eligible to be president, but they are stepping on dangerous ground claiming he's not also Canadian.
