If you're a Texas Democrat with an email address, you probably got a few eyebrow-raising emails this morning from some of the state's heavy hitter Democratic organizations urging Wendy Davis to run for governor.
Grace Garcia, ED of Annie's List, the organization dedicated to electing progressive women in Texas, was first with “We Want Wendy!” and a call to encourage Wendy to run. Next up was Battleground Texas ED Jenn Brown with an email promising a sticker for everyone who joined in the sentiment “We want Wendy for Governor.”
Next out of the gate? TDP Chairman Gilberto Hinojosa, who stated “I want Wendy!” and also called for sign-ups of support. Last but not least, Lone Star Project made clear that “We Want Wendy!” and called for pledges of support.
What can it all mean?! Find out below the jump.Senator Davis announced recently that she would decide on her plans to either run for re-election to SD-10 or seek the Governor's office within two weeks.
I've already made myself clear on why it is so important for Wendy Davis to seize on the momentum that started when she rose to speak on the last day of the first special session.
And while no official announcement has been made yet, I'll eat my own pink running shoes if this full-court online press isn't paving the way for an announcement from Davis that she's seeking our state's top office in the next week or so.
It remains to be seen what kind of campaign team she will assemble and how they'll approach the daunting task of winning a statewide election in Texas, but this early and eager show of support from the organizations that will need to go all in for Wendy is exciting to see.
This is what Texas Democrats and progressives have been waiting for for years — an exciting candidate and a strong party infrastructure to provide the base turnout they need. Now, it's crucial that our party fill out a strong statewide ticket and run great candidates up and down the ballot to capture this momentum and make the case to voters that we need new leadership in Texas.
And it's incumbent on us, activists and members of the base, to lace up our own shoes, open our wallets, burn through our cell phone minutes, and do everything we can to help get Wendy Davis and all of our Democrats elected.
If she runs, of course. If she runs.
