Frustrated by the lack of clarity in conveying the cuts to Texas public education, Democratic State Representative Gene Wu compiled a decade's worth of data gathered from the Legislative Budget Board, Texas Education Agency, and other government sources in producing the following graph.
This chart illustrates the cuts and legislative actions that have resulted in significantly lower per pupil spending. Local, state, and federal totals are given, and the graph has been adjusted for inflation and reflects spending in terms of constant 2004 dollars.
“The data speaks for itself,” said Wu. “This chart demonstrates that students and teachers need education funding restored to achieve the higher standards that we have asked of them.”
