Texas Southern University Dems Endorsements

by: TxDemocrat08

Sun Feb 12, 2006 at 03:01 AM CST

On Friday February 10, 2006 the Texas Southern University Dems endorsed the candidates we felt were strong enough to defeat Republicans in Novemeber. The race that came the closest was the race for Governor, but Bob Gammage eventually came out the winner. In other races the candidates didn't have a hard time getting the necessary support from the organization. The TSU Dems are proud to endorse the follwing individuals.

Governor: Bob Gammage
Senate: Barbara Radnofsky
Lt. Gov: Ben Grant
Attorney General: David Van Os
Agriculture Commissioner: Koecadee Melton, Jr.
State Representative District 146: Borris Miles
State Representative District 147: Cheryl Armitige
U.S Congress District 7: Jim Henley

why not Garnet Coleman?? (1.00 / 1)
What has he done to you?

Why Not Garnet (3.00 / 1)
When you don't see a Representative on campus or even near it, we can't support that person. Garnet has made it very clear that he doesn't support TSU. You can say that you support him because he cares more about the white people in his district than he does the students at TSU and people in 3rd Ward.

There were a couple of duplicate journals on this entry, I'm consolidating them.  Please watch out for that.

Doesn't support TSU or the 3rd Ward? (3.00 / 2)
Wow. I don't know where that came from.

In 2001, Rep. Coleman secured $125 million in new funding for TSU, which allowed TSU to break ground on the Barbara Jordan - Mickey Leland School of Public Affairs.

He also spent a great deal of time fighting against education privatization. Remember what HISD wanted to do to Yates? They wanted to do that all over the state, but Rep. Coleman fought against that b/c he believes schools should be for kids and not for profiteers.

He's helped lead the charge to protect CHIP, helped kill the voter ID bill that could have disenfranchised thousands of minorities in Texas, and helped protect the Top Ten Percent Rule. All while he was Chair of the Texas Legislative Black Caucus.

Rep. Coleman passed an amendment to SB 356 that makes it so that community organizations could turn abandoned homes into affordable, low-density housing -- so that those folks in the 3rd ward and South Park can rent housing and afford to stay in neighborhoods they've grown up in all their lives.

Rep. Coleman is one of the best Democrats in the House. I can't imagine why you wouldn't endorse him.

Now, a very great man once said that some people rob you with a fountain pen.
