A Texas judge is refusing to perform marriages for straight couples, according to a report in The Root. Judge Tonya Parker is a judge in Dallas County. As such, she has authority to preside over marriage ceremonies. She is also a lesbian. From the reports, it would appear that her choice not to perform marriages for straight couples is informed by her career as a jurist.
According to The Root story:
"I do not perform them because it is not an equal application of the law. Period," she said, according to the Dallas Voice.
However, the story in The Root also quotes her addressing the personal aspect of this issue for her:
"[I]t's kind of oxymoronic for me to perform ceremonies that can't be performed for me, so I'm not going to do it."
