Do you play Yahtzee, or maintain a fleet of yachts?

by: Karl-Thomas Musselman

Normally when I get a press release that starts like this it's usually a pretty quick ticket into the snooze folder.

Washington, DC- Congressman Lloyd Doggett (D-TX) a senior member of the House Ways and Means Committee today spoke against the repeal of the estate tax.

But most press notices don't come with a YouTube video of those remarks, remarks that make me jealous I don't have a Democrat representing me in Congress (which is why I'm so up on my support for John Courage).

Watch this (and the full text on the flip).

"For the Wealthiest Few: The Death of Taxes"

June 22, 2006

For the wealthiest few, Republicans don't just aim to eliminate the misnamed "death tax," they want the death of all taxes.

They have got some exit strategy, not for our troops sacrificing their all and facing death in Iraq, just an exit strategy for billionaires for the tax burden they should share to support our Nation.

For whom do they spell relief today?

Minimum wage. Won't raise it.

Gas prices?  Won't cut them.

Drug prices? Won't lower them.

Veteran's health care. Can't cover it.

Student loans, Medicaid, Medicare.  Cut, cut, cut.

This is truly the "Cut and Run" Congress -- cutting relief for most Americans, while running up a huge deficit to finance more billionaire tax breaks.

Do you benefit from this latest Republican tax break?  Take this quiz:

Do you play Yahtzee, or maintain a fleet of yachts?

Do you wear a hard hat or a silk top hat?

Do you drive a pick-up or own a gallery of Picassos?

Do you pump gas by the gallon, or sell it by the barrel?

Only if the answer is the latter for all of these questions, are you likely to be among the handful of Americans who benefits from not having to pay a tax that Teddy Roosevelt, back when there were a few Teddy Roosevelt Republicans, called the key to not having us copy the landed aristocracy of the European continent.

This bill today goes beyond fiscal irresponsibility; it is true fiscal insanity -- with burden upon burden to be born by our children and grandchildren.  Mr. Thomas is correct that it is a compromise, but only in the sense that it compromises our families and our nation's future and strength.

I hate Pete Craddick (0.00 / 0)
and all the other legislative invertebrates who put political gain at the front of the queue in that session.

I will be consoled, even jubilant, when I can say "Congress now really has Courage" in November.

But I will still hate Pete Craddick.

Before you win, you have to fight. Come fight along with us at TexasKaos.

Mr. Dogget,

You are a true tough-speakin' Democrat!

You and me both.

But Lloyd assured us, after his district was shrunk to but a shadow its former self, that he would continue to fight for those who (like me) elected him originally.

I am glad he continues to do so.

My Congressman in exile (0.00 / 0)
I still consider him my Congressman and he does still represent me well.  Now officially the other creep Tom DeLay stuck me with (Lamar Smith) is headed for early retirement.  And I'm helping make sure of that.
