According to a breaking story posted early this morning by USA Today, and later picked up by the Washington Post, an AP News investigation revealed that Rick Perry used government phone lines in the Governor's Office to fundraise money for his presidential campaign.
"Time and again, Texas Gov. Rick Perry picked up his office phone in the months before he would announce his bid for the presidency. He dialed wealthy friends who were his big fundraisers and state officials who owed him for their jobs."
The report revealed the governor's meetings and phone calls before he officially launched his presidential campaign.
Also reported in the New York Daily News:
"A few of his chats in April were with Brint Ryan, a Dallas businessman who later would support "Make Us Great Again," Perry's super political action committee."
Texas law prohibits campaign phone calls to be made with government phone lines, as does common sense. Federal law also prohibits a PAC, like the one that Brint Ryan founded, from coordinating activities with the governor.
The AP news search was incomplete because the Perry Camp failed to provide complete records after the Associated Press's public information request.
"The AP's review was incomplete. When Perry's administration turned over the records AP had requested, it censored dozens of calls for privacy reasons, and his schedules in recent years contain only partial information. Perry has said publicly that government institutions should be more transparent and accountable to voters." |
