State Department holds hearing on Keystone pipeline
The State Department holds a hearing on the proposed and controversial Keystone XL pipeline, which would bring tar sand oil from Alberta, Canada, to the Texas Gulf Coast. Join the Campus Environmental Center in opposing this pipeline.
The extraction process would destroy pristine boreal forest the size of England. The pipeline is expected to average 91 spills over the next 50 years. The refinement of this oil would further pollute Texas' most polluted city, Houston. Finally, the project would raise the oil and gas industry's total greenhouse gas emissions by one-third.

| Student, citizen, community, religious and environmental groups across America oppose the Keystone XL Pipeline. Here are a few facts to highlight some of the reasons why the UT Austin Campus Environmental Center is against the pipeline and see how you can get involved:
The Facts
* Extracting this oil would require cutting down some 740,000 acres of pristine boreal forest. [1]
* This project will raise the total oil and gas industry's greenhouse gas emissions by one-third. [1]
* The refining of this dirty Tar Sands Oil will only add to the pollution of our state's largest city, Houston. [2]
* The director of the NASA Goddard Institute and a climate scientist, James Hansen, said, "[the] exploitation of tar sands would make it implausible to stabilize climate and avoid disastrous global climate impacts...it is essentially game over..." [3]
* The Canadian people already stopped this pipeline from being built through a large portion of Canada. [2]
* So now the oil companies are trying to bring it through the United States: through Montana, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas, all the way to the Gulf of Mexico. [2]
* Let's stop them! Let's stop this project!
The Campaign
* On September 28, the State Department is holding a hearing to get a feel for people's opinions on this subject and to see if it is a wise choice for President Obama to approve the Keystone XL Oil Pipeline.
* We need to give them a clear message that this is not a wise choice and that the students at the University of Texas do not support this project.
* To do this, we need to pass a student government resolution by September 28 articulating our protest to this Tar Sands Oil Project.
* We also need everyone who can, to attend the hearing on September 28 and to let the State Department know that they must not approve this project.
