Today, Politico reports that Perry will announce his intentions to run for president this Saturday, the same day as the Ames Straw Poll. Perry will tell "conservative" activists gathered at the RedState convention in Charleston that he will be a candidate.
Immediately after, Perry will make his first trip to New Hampshire for a house party in his honor. He's expected to campaign in Iowa next week.
Welcome to the race, Rick. We all look forward to your entrance...for different reasons.
You're probably excited because you think you have a great record to run on that trumps all your opponents'.
What you fail to realize is that your record is actually your greatest weakness. Once the shock waves of your announcement are gone, all that will be left is this question: "What's Rick Perry's real record?" Republicans, Democrats and the mainstream media will all be asking that same question. We Texans who have been keeping tracking of your shameful record will help them discover you every step of the way. And I'm sorry (actually, thrilled) to tell you, you just can't stand up to that type of scrutiny.
You've gutted public education in Texas, made us poorer and more dependent on government assistance, killed an innocent man, scandalized your office for your own private gain numerous times and hampered Texas' economic growth by failing to invest in Texans.
You'll try to brush all that (and more) over. You'll try to swagger your way through every media discovery of what you've done in this state.
You're not in Texas anymore, Rick. You're about to travel the country while the myth you've spread about the well-being of our beloved state unravels. And for that, we may all end up grateful for your run. |
