Obama Leads All Republicans Among Voters Who Oppose Secession

by: Katherine Haenschen

Sun Jul 03, 2011 at 04:36 PM CDT

Just in time for Independence Day, here's a patriotic nugget from a recent Public Policy Polling survey:

18% of voters think the state should secede, to 71% who are opposed to the idea with 11% unsure. ... With the 71% who oppose secession Obama leads Romney by 6, Paul by 12, Pawlenty, Cain, and Bachmann by 15, Palin by 17, and Perry by 19.

What's with the "Not Sure" secession demographic? You really not sure if you want to live in the Lord of the Flies scenario that Nation-of-Texas Republicans would create if left to their own devices?

Here's the results as a table, with the crosstabs of candidate favorability by pro-secessionists teased out:

Do you think Texas should secede from
the United States, or not?

Texas should secede: 18%
It should not: 71%
Not sure: 11%
Approval/Disapproval of Candidates from
voters who want to Secede:

Obama: 15/83
Bachmann: 62/17
Cain: 45/23
Palin: 61/28
Pawlenty: 27/31
Romney: 37/39
Paul: 48/25
Perry: 71/23

Perry's clearly the front runner amongst voters who want to leave the nation, rather than lead the nation, but Palin and Bachmann are hot on his heels. Interesting that the secessionistas are fairly lukewarm on Pawlenty and Romney, even though Romney runs strongest of all potential Republican nominees in Texas. Should he get the nomination, might a Medina-type run as a Third Party option in Texas for the Tea Party-style "patriots"?

I'm sad to report that secession has trended mildly upward since last September, when 15% of voters in the state supported seceding from the Union while 72% opposed it. Of course, this entire post might seem familiar to you -- as you may recall, Bill White led the governor's race 51-42 with voters who wanted to be Americans. A lot of good that did us!

Maybe PPP is onto something:

Demographic change may make Texas winnable for Democrats in the long run but in the shorter term successfully encouraging the secessionists to stay at home would be a winning strategy.

In 2012, secessionists should consider voting on November 5 in order to fully demonstrate their independence from these ridiculous national election dates.

But hey, count me as of the many Texas voters who want to be a member of the union, and will happily celebrate our great United States of America tomorrow. Meanwhile, I am sure the secessionists will go to work despite the Federal holiday, and won't partake in parades, picnics, or family barbecues celebrating the birth of the nation they're so desperate to leave. Anything else would be downright hypocritical!

Happy 4th of July, BOR readers!

I am an American (0.00 / 0)
I hope the conservatives never forget what America has done for them.  I am an American and if the conservatives and the Republicans and the right wing followers are successful in Texas secession I will leave Texas and move to America, because I am an American whether the conservatives like it or not.

When liberals criticize anything the government does (0.00 / 0)
they are anti-American, and clearly hate America.

When a conservative talks about secession and constantly bashes the government, they are a patriot.

Some people actually believe this.

Have you relayed this message to your co-workers in the Randi Shade campaign? (1.00 / 5)

Ah, it's now time for those who just finished working together with Rick Perry's pollster and Mike McCaul's hatchet man in the Randi Shade campaign to polish their Democratic credentials again. Establishment Democrats always do that after working in hand in glove with Republicans on behalf of a special interest agenda and/or a candidate backed by the business elite. Reminds me of the time Bill Clinton joined with Speaker Newt Gingrich in 1993 to push NAFTA through Congress over the opposition of 2/3 of House Democrats.

re: (3.50 / 4)
A few clarifications:

40 percent of House Democrats voted for NAFTA. Not 1/3.  Among those were Austin's own Jake Pickle and Nancy Pelosi.

And Newt Gingrich was not Speaker Newt Gingrich in 1993.

Thanks for correcting my errors (0.00 / 0)

You are correct, it was 40%. That means only 60% of House Democrats voted against the Clinton White House's push for the globalization agenda of Wall Street and Wal-Mart in 1993. And you are also correct in pointing out that it wasn't until 1994 that Newt Gingrich became Speaker. In '93, he was still Republican House Leader and working hand in glove with the Establishment Democrats in the Clinton Administration like Treasury Sec. Lloyd Bentsen and Rahm Emanuel to enact NAFTA over the vigorous opposition of the AFL-CIO, the Sierra Club, all of the major human rights organizations, the Catholic Bishop's Conference and other faith- based groups. But that's what Establishment Democrats do, work with Republicans on behalf  of the moneyed interests that they both serve.

You are also correct about Nancy Pelosi and Jake Pickle voting for NAFTA. Pelosi did it because San Franciso is a port city and it's awfully tough for any elected official to fight foreign trade bills in a city with a large port. All the more reason to give immense credit to Rep. Gene Green of Houston for consistently voting against the globalization agenda of Wall Street and Wak-Mart. It was his vote against NAFTA that got Craig Washington an opponent funded by the fat cats who dominate the Port of Houston  Authority.  Funny that you should mention Jake Pickle in a Democratic forum. He was the quintessential Establishment Democrats with a long record of faithful service to the special interests. His PR firm,
Syers Pickle & Wynn, produced the infamous Port Arthur on behalf of Allan Shivers 1954 campaign for governor against Ralph Yarborough, in an effort to link Yarborough to alleged communists in the CIO and a strike in Port Arthur. Pickle worked not only for Shivers in '54 but for Price Daniel in '56. Both Shivers and Daniel supported the Republican presidential ticket in 1952 and cross-filed, with both of their names appearing on the Republican and Democratic tickets as candidates for governor and the U.S.
Seante, respectively. Pickle then became SDEC Executive Director under Price Daniel, and shortly thereafter was appointed by him as the employer member and chairman of what is now the Texas Workforce Commission. He deserved to be the employer member because he always voted with the employers on the commission. In the U.S. House, he was a faithful ally of banks and corporations on the Ways and Means Committee. A Wright Patman he wasn't. Like most Establishment Democrats, he also mastered the art of conning the libs and seducing the Democrats back home with plenty of port and lots of good constituent service. None of it concealed Pickle's role as a big time water carrier for special interests.

I didn't "work" for the campaign. (2.00 / 1)
I did some volunteer work and was a supporter.

As for being backed by the business elite and working with Republicans, that isn't inherently bad.  These guilt by association games get pretty tiresome.  Knee jerk opposition to anything business supports isn't particularly helpful to the cause of environmentalism.

The main reason I supported Shade was that I thought she would better serve the environment by being a stronger supporter of projects that increased density and therefore reduced sprawl.  If that makes me a big bad "establishment Democrat", so be it.
