Statement from Randi Shade Regarding June 18th Runoff Election

by: Karl-Thomas Musselman

Wed May 18, 2011 at 06:28 PM CDT

The following is a statement from Randi Shade with regard to the June 18th runoff election to be held between her and challenger Kathie Tovo.

"Over the past three days, I have been inundated with phone calls and emails from friends, supporters and strangers, urging me to stay in the race for Place 3, and worried that they will no longer be represented at City Hall.  I intend to run and win in the run-off election on June 18."

"Despite the view of some political pundits, I am confident that we can compete effectively and win the run-off election.  The turnout on May 14th was just 7% -- the lowest turnout in decades.  The final margin between myself and my opponent on Election Day was just over 4,000 votes -- less than 1/2 of 1% of Austin's population.  That margin is too small, and the differences between myself and my opponent are too big, for me and my supporters to quit this race."

"On a broad range of issues critical to Austin's future, my opponent and I have fundamentally different views.  The run-off election will be about those issues and differences, and with just two candidates in this race, voters will have a very clear choice to make."

"Some of my opponent's supporters have said that I should quit this race to avoid the cost of the election.  But I believe that my opponent's positions on the issues would put millions of public dollars at risk.  I cannot in good conscience quit this race when the stakes, and the potential costs, are so high."

"Our entire campaign team is energized and looking forward to a vigorous contest. I am hopeful that Austin voters will participate in this run-off election in numbers that are worthy of our great city and its greater future."

Council Member Shade will hold a press conference on Thursday to talk more about the key issues in the run-off election.

Turnout, Austin! (3.00 / 2)
Seriously, Austin, this is a no-brainer. We need to improve our turnout in general, or no election results will ever be meaningful.

I'm thrilled that Randi is continuing the race. For one thing, I've learned more about city politics in the last few months of this election than I'd learned in my four years in Austin. Knowing what I know, I am proud to call myself a Randi Shade supporter.

To me this run-off is about one basic question: (3.00 / 2)
The Austin metro area is projected to add a half million new residents in the next ten years; how are we going to meet that challenge?  Tovo's answer to any proactive solution is "no, we can't."  No, we can't invest in our infrastructure (e.g. WPT4) to accommodate our growth.  No, we can't allow changes in our zoning and housing policy (e.g. repealing the McMansion ordinance) to allow young families to find affordable housing options in the central city.  No we can't allow denser development that conflicts with the Neighborhood Plans.  No we can't reverse the trend of young families fleeing the central cities and our city schools being threatended with closures as a consequence low enrollment.  Tovo and her supporters don't believe that Austin can meet this challenge.

In rejecting all the proactive and plausible options to change the trend, Tovo backers tacitly accept that Austinites, particularly young families, will continue to leave in droves for the suburbs.  They are willing to accept sprawl and that Austin would become a more generic sprawled Texas city like Houston, Dallas and San Antonio.  It's Randi's job, and the job of her supporters to make the case that yes, we can meet this challenge.  Shade supporters, let's get on the phones, knock on doors, blow up facebook, twitter, etc. and let this city know what's at stake, which candidate wants to roll up her sleeves and fight to keep Austin's soul, and which candidate accepts Austin becoming just another Texas city as long as the central city single-family homeowners who support her get their way.
