Williamson County Democratic Party appoints new chair

by: dembones

( - promoted by Matt Glazer)

The Williamson County Democratic Party met Thursday to appoint Brian Hamon to fill the unexpired term as chairman. A software engineer from Round Rock with a background in communications, Hamon takes over after the abrupt departure of Greg Windham, who resigned Tuesday. In a press release, the party says it "has not missed a beat since the resignation of its former chair and is delighted to have Mr. Hamon taking the lead in our continuing effort to elect Democratic candidates in the county, in judicial and SBOE districts, and throughout the state."

"The executive committee sent a strong message to Democrats in Williamson County: We will fight for you. For better schools. For better jobs. For better government," Hamon said. "The Democratic Party has an exceptionally qualified slate of candidates running for local office. We will work around the clock during the remaining days until election day to get out our message of competence, fairness and transparency in government."

The local party represents Democrats from the northern Austin metropolitan area, including Round Rock, Cedar Park, Georgetown and Taylor. Democratic candidates ended a 16-year drought in elective office in November 2008 when State Rep. Diana Maldonado won in the battleground district 52 race, covering the eastern portion of the county.

This election year, the Williamson county Democrats have put together an exceptionally qualified slate of candidates running for local office.

Rep. Maldonado proved her effectiveness in her very first legislative session, was selected Freshman of the Year, brought key funding for a higher education center, infrastructure and jobs to the district, and earned the endorsements of the Austin American-Statesman, Williamson County Sun and other local newspapers.

For county commissioner, the Democrats are fielding Jeff Maurice and Jim Stauber. Jeff is a former Dell senior corporate counsel with a passion for getting a better deal for the taxpayer in government contracts. Jim is a retired union member who runs his community's water supply corporation in Liberty Hill and has a long history of community service.

We have attorneys Allyson Rowe and Teresa Duffin running for county court at law seats. They believe justice in Williamson county has for too long been held exclusively by one party.

Voters in Williamson county believe that local government is ossified, too long under single-party rule, corrupt and ineffective. Those dissatisfied with the county's anemic response to Tropical Storm Hermine flooding, the glacial pace of developing our transportation and utility infrastructure and the brother-in-law deals to favored contractors are fed up with the machine politics of entrenched, unaccountable Republicans. The pattern will continue until voters elect Democrats to break up the monopoly.

The party's full press release is below the fold.

SUBJECT:  Election of New County Chair for the Williamson County Democratic Party
FROM:  The Williamson County Democratic Party

WILLIAMSON COUNTY DEMOCRATIC PARTY ELECTS STRONG NEW LEADER

The Williamson County Democratic Party (WCDP) tonight reached into an abundant collection of talented and strong leaders to elect one of its number to lead the party through the final stages of the campaign season and forward into the future.  We are proud to announce the unanimous election of Mr. Brian Hamon to serve as the new County Chair of the WCDP.

Mr. Hamon is a long-time member of the party with a history of Democratic activism.  Four years ago, he was elected to serve as a Democratic Party precinct chair in Williamson County.  He quickly became an important and active member of the party, serving on numerous committees, most recently on the WCDP Communication Committee.  His technology skills and communication background enabled him to develop several software programs for the party and its precinct chairs, including programs to assist with the GOTV effort and coordination of delegates for the county conventions.

In 2008, Mr. Hamon was elected to represent Senate District 5 on the State Democratic Executive Committee and he was reelected to that position in 2010.  At this time he is the Chair of the State Party's Grassroots Committee and a member of the Majority Builder Committee.

The Williamson County Democratic Party has not missed a beat since the resignation of its former chair and is delighted to have Mr. Hamon taking the lead in our continuing effort to elect Democratic candidates in the county, in judicial and SBOE districts, and throughout the state.

Congratulations, Brian! And now I ask for your help. (0.00 / 0)
The Williamson County Democratic Party could not possibly have made a wiser choice.  Every vote matters in this election, and with you in charge I have no doubt that Williamson County will see a surge in Democratic votes.

A few months ago you and I talked about which county in Texas has the state's most incompetent Democratic county chair.  It was a virtual dead heat between Williamson County and Bexar County.  It's a very good thing for our Democratic candidates that Williamson County is no longer in consideration for this ignoble distinction.

The chair of the Bexar County Democratic Party has refused to turn over any financial records to the Budget and Finance Committee pertaining to the period in which he was the only signatory on the party's accounts.  He has refused to turn over to the Communications Committee the access codes to the party website.  You can still find on the home page of that website an announcement about an event that took place two and a half months ago.  The only way committees can get their meetings posted on the website calendar is to schedule them through one of the associations external to the party that, thanks to a previous webmaster for the party, feed directly into the party calendar.  Our county chair has been quoted numerous times in the media taking potshots at our Democratic elected officials.  He insists on holding CEC meetings in a building that was recently used for storing toxic chemicals, and though the chemicals are no longer there, the fumes still remain.  I attended this month's CEC meeting (which lacked quorum) and afterward was sick for a week from the chemicals.  Others who attended previous committee meetings in the building were sickened for much longer periods.  The CEC quorum exceeds the legal maximum occupancy for the building.  The county chair has several times suggested that those who disapprove of his leadership should take him to court to get a writ of mandamus.  Nevertheless, Democrats in Bexar County are working hard to get our candidates elected, and our local Democratic ticket is just as strong as the statewide ticket.

I believe that after this election it is crucial to the long-term interest of the Texas Democratic Party that the SDEC, of which you are a member, get involved in ensuring that the county chair of the Bexar County Democratic Party adhere to the Rules of the Texas Democratic Party as well as the Continuing Rules of the Bexar County Democratic Party, because two years from now we will have Democratic candidates whose viability hinges on an effective party organization every bit as much as our current candidates are relying on us now.

Again, congratulations on being selected to lead the Democratic Party in a central battleground where the prognosis has just improved considerably.
