Our New TV Ad Hits Rick Perry On Misuse of Hurricane Ike $$$

by: Back To Basics

( - promoted by Phillip Martin)

Here's our new TV ad, which we've unleashed this morning in several markets, that showcases the hypocrisy of Rick Perry in taking federal stimulus money meant for Hurricane Ike reconstruction for the restoration of his Governor's mansion.

This quote by Rick Perry during the Hurricane Ike disaster just says it all:

"I absolutely understand they want to get back to their homes....I'd like to get back to the Mansion."

That's pure, unmitigated gall to compare himself to the thousands of Hurricane Ike victims who lost their homes. You see, while Rick Perry bemoaned the reconstruction of his Governor's mansion, he was living in the lap of luxury in a $10,000 per month rental mansion paid for by taxpayers.

The backstory is that during Ike's aftermath, Perry sent repeated requests to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), begging for full reimbursement of emergency public assistance costs. However, when Texas did receive its FEMA reimbursement, Perry worked behind the scenes to pluck those federal dollars for his own pet project- restoring the Governor's mansion, even though he knew full well that emergency responders had not yet been fully compensated.

Here's our official statement on that shameful story about how Rick Perry misused our stimulus dollars for his Governor's Mansion:

"The story this ad tells sums up exactly what kind of politician Rick Perry is. In the middle of a recession, he takes federal dollars meant to pay back local communities hurt by Hurricane Ike, and then uses that money for his own mansion.

And at the end of the day, he runs from accountability by refusing to debate or even acknowledge his own $21 billion budget deficit.  Rick Perry doesn't think that the rules we live by apply to him.  While he's living on the taxpayer dole for his rent, and campaign donations for his food, his drink, parties with his buddies, and even his cable TV.  If he wants to hide out in his $10,000 a month taxpayer-funded mansion, we're just going to keep holding him accountable."

Please help us spread the word about Perry's misuse of stimulus funds on Facebook by clicking the "like" button at the top of the diary and on Twitter!

Disclosure: Donations will be used by the Back to Basics PAC to advocate on behalf of Texans against the hypocrisy of self-serving politicians.

And the Houston Chronic... (0.00 / 0)
has already called the ad misleading.

Sometimes in political campaigns, commercials can hit that line where spin and a lie meet. The new Back to Basics PAC ad against Gov. Rick Perry is at that point. The commercial says Perry diverted Hurricane Ike money for the repair of the burned Texas Governor's Mansion. That is not really true.

And here's our correction to the Houston Chronicle story (0.00 / 0)
Actually, just follow the money. It's from the bill itself:

HB 4586: http://www.capitol.state.tx.us...

SECTION 6.  PRESERVATION BOARD OR HISTORICAL COMMISSION: RESTORATION OF THE GOVERNOR'S MANSION.  Out of reimbursements received from the Federal Emergency Management Agency for expenditures that were paid for with funds transferred from the Health and Human Services Commission to the Department of Public Safety during the state fiscal year ending August 31, 2009, an amount not to exceed $11,000,000 is appropriated for the two-year period beginning on the effective date of this Act, in addition to other amounts appropriated for the state fiscal biennium ending August 31, 2009, for costs associated with the restoration of the Governor's Mansion. The appropriation is to:
   (1)  the State Preservation Board, contingent on the enactment and becoming law of S.B. 2307 or similar legislation by the 81st Legislature in regular session that imposes responsibility on the State Preservation Board for the preservation and maintenance of the Governor's Mansion; or
   (2)  the Texas Historical Commission, if the 81st Legislature in regular session does not enact S.B. 2307 or similar legislation that becomes law that imposes responsibility on the State Preservation Board for the preservation and maintenance of the Governor's Mansion.

from the House Research Organization report:

DISASTER EXPENSES: CSHB 4586 would appropriate $698.9 million in general revenue to state agencies and institutions of higher education for costs and reimbursements related to natural disasters, including Hurricane Ike, that occurred in fiscal 2008-09 and before the bill's effective date.

Well, who voted for it? (0.00 / 0)
Looks like some Democrats as well as some Republicans in both the House and the Senate voted for it. With the exception of 1 "present, not voting" it passed unanimously in both the House and the Senate.

But Perry somehow just stole the money. What you are implying. Looks more like the Legislature gave him the money. Although what they did was simply divert funds for the restoration. They did. Not Perry.

Another act of desperation by a desperate campaign.

When Democrats see Democratic candidates twisting and turning the truth, it doesn't really make them feel real comfortable voting for the candidate. It certainly doesn't make Republicans comfortable voting for them.

Perry is backed by sleazy CEOs. White is backed by sleazy trial attorneys.  Take your pick of the lesser of two evils I suppose. Or just not vote. Which is probably what a lot of Texans will do. Just not vote.

So again it depends on how many Democrats turn out at the polls and how many Republicans turn out at the polls.

Neither particularly fond of their candidate. Just adamant they want their party to win.
