Austin Proposition 1 Campaign Raises $70,000

by: Karl-Thomas Musselman

In addition to all the mid-term candidates on the ballot this November, Austin voters will have a chance to vote on Proposition 1, $90 million in transportation bonds supporting new roads, sidewalks, trails, and bikeways across the city. Support for Prop 1 is being lead by the Get Austin Moving PAC which has just reported $70,000 in donations and pledges.

"We've received donations from businesses, nonprofit organizations and individuals throughout the city, representing broad-based support for this bond package," said Ted Siff, Treasurer of the Get Austin Moving PAC. "We are proud to report that after only a little more than a month of fundraising, we have received $59,580 in contributions and raised $11,900 in pledges to support our grassroots campaigning efforts," added Mr. Siff.

Proposition 1 has been endorsed by over 30 community, neighborhood, and political groups including the Travis County Democratic Party. Opposition isn't terribly organized but includes the Real Estate Council of Austin who's primary point of contention is that they wanted to vote on bond components separately. You can view all of the projects Proposition 1 will fund here and read the FAQ about this year's bond campaign. While Proposition 1 is only $90 million worth of projects, it will not increase the tax rate if passed as the total is currently within the city's bonding capacity.

For full disclosure, I am one of the over 50 steering committee members of Get Austin Moving and built the campaign website at www.GetAustinMoving.com.

Clarifying RECA's Position (0.00 / 0)
KT,

I would like to clarify a couple of points in your post. While it is true that RECA did not support the bond package, RECA leadership concluded that it should not aggressively oppose it in recognition of its small size and out of respect for the good intentions of City leadership that has elected to move ahead with this proposal. RECA also decided NOT to move forward with an opposition campaign because it is fiscally imprudent to proceed with aggressive opposition to the bond package based on principle alone. Based on this, it is incorrect to say that opposition is "being led" by RECA.

Also, RECA never advocated to list each bond project separately. RECA leadership, however, did advocate for two packages: one for roadway projects and one for alternative mobility and quality of life projects. This would give voters the opportunity to accept or reject the City's new funding priorities for transportation and to present the most transparency possible.

Cheers,
Michael Wilt
Director of Government Relations
Real Estate Council of Austin

I reworded the sentence referencing RECA to be more precise, but the point remains. Opposition hasn't been particularly organized or with one voice- and the only people speaking out from the very beginning were representatives of RECA- who very much focused on splitting up the bond to be more than one piece.

I think that the 'principle' is a thinly veiled excuse for a mindset that only wants roads. I would not be surprised that if the bond package was split up as suggested that RECA would be in favor of the roads and opposed to anything else.

But that's just my opinion and not news.
