Texas Democratic Convention SD1

by: GreggChair

Mon Jun 12, 2006 at 07:48 PM CDT

(If you have reports from your district about the convention, feel free to post journals on them. Many of us were so busy at various part of the convention, it would be nice to hear the stories and other victories across the state. - promoted by Karl-Thomas Musselman)

I just arrived back home in Gregg County from the Democratic State Convention. This was my first time to experience a convention as County Chair and it was interesting, to say the least.

Gregg County started out last year with high hopes of filling the 29 delegate seats we had available. With momentum in our favor, and local interest growing daily, we had 25 sign up at the County Convention for Ft Worth. Unfortunately, we lost all but 8 because of a failed reservation system that left everyone wondering if they had a room until the last minute. It was very sad.

On Thursday, the $50 cocktail party at the Downtown Hilton, was a total bust. Not one speaker, no food left after 1 hour, and absolutely no buzz.

It was Friday, however, when I was the most concerned about the future of the Party. In Senate District 1, we had an 11:00 am Pre-Caucus meeting of just the county chairs. At this meeting we hashed out in advance of the regular meeting, to be held at 3:00 pm, all of the nominations and positions that were supposed to be decided at the Senate District Caucus Meeting.

I say we must end the back room, closed (therefore illegal) meetings, and get the process back in the hands of the people. Letting the established party members control the nominations and decide policy for the rest of the delegates has got to stop.

I know this will be very unpopular with those that feel the way things are done is in the best interest of the Party. I know these long time members mean well and I have the utmost respect for them. It does not change my opinion that we should open up our Party and the way we do things to the entire delegation and put an end to the "business as usual" tactics that, while they get us the nominations we desire, they drive away the new blood we need so badly to help us win in November.

Poll
What is the best way to choose our committees?
Let the SDEC leadership decide for us.
Have Pre-Caucus meetings with only Chairs present.
Find out who the big money donors want.
Ask the Republicans who they would prefer.
Let the people decide for themselves.

Thanks for the report GreggChair (0.00 / 0)
I'm really disappointed that you had willing delegates that didn't attend due to the hotel situation.  That is very disturbing.

I'm even more disturbed by your pre-caucus meeting if you really meant that you decided who would be elected in the pre-caucus meeting. You aren't saying that the positions were just discussed and who was running etc.  You mean the winners were decided, right?  I'm going to choke on that one.

Yes, nominees were picked BEFORE the SD1 caucus (0.00 / 0)
To confirm your suspicions, there was a "pre-caucus" meeting held for county chairs only (contrary to the TDP rule against closed meetings) at which the county chairs were told who would be put up for nomination for the committees and for the SDEC.  These nominees were announced by the moderator at the SD1 caucus.  Although there was technically a vote, the moderator announced that the county chairs were "recommending" these nominees.  The county chairs had no say in it; the decisions were made prior to the "pre-caucus" meeting and announced to the county chairs.  One attempt to circumvent this process was met with opposition by the moderator who announced repeatedly which nominee the county chairs had recommended.

whoever put let the SDEC decide was joking ...

Are you sure you were in Fort Worth? (5.00 / 1)
You say:

"On Thursday, the $50 cocktail party at the Downtown Hilton, was a total bust. Not one speaker, no food left after 1 hour, and absolutely no buzz."

Seriously, were you even there?  How about the cheers when Boyd announced the successful lawsuit against RPT to prevent them from placing DeLay's replacement on the ballot (for now)?

And when will people wrap their heads around the fact that it is NOT the TDP's fault that a hotel changed ownership and reservations were cancelled?  Does anybody really believe the people who worked their asses off organizing the convention wanted that to happen, or that they could control it?

Jeez, the constant negativity among BOR "regulars" is really getting to be a downer...

Must. Not. Release. Fists. Of. Snark. (0.00 / 0)
Okay, I know, cheers for Richie and more attendees than in previous years.

Got it. Good.

Delighted about the lawsuit, and I'm going to be very upset if it fades away post convention.  The Republican WATB in TX-22 need to be hoisted on their own petard early and often.  I want chafing and a rash.

But:

1.  there weren't enough rooms for the attendees
2.  there wasn't enough food,
3.  the accessibility issues on the venue sound like a nightmare
4.  the schedule was a moveable disaster for anyone not named Chris Bell, Barbara Radnofsky, or Wes Clark
5.  the promised time for the statewide candidate slate (10 minutes per) was never intended to be fulfilled (or we have an scheduling authority who needs to relearn his/her multiplication tables)
6. the candidates program not only omitted at least one candidate, Larry Stallings of District 122, completely, but misplaced the candidate from District 121 into his district thus providing false information on both.

What's the reason this isn't being called the Great Ft. Worth Clusterfuck of '06 again?

I guess I did let the snark go, after all...

Before you win, you have to fight. Come fight along with us at TexasKaos.

My county chair and friend has made the BOR Front Page!

Thanks for the report.
You're right -- we need to open up the process at all levels

Isn't little miss moderate in SD1?

Her hair swoosh was at half power (0.00 / 0)
Though I did see her in a red outfit again at the convention.
