40/40: Get to Know VaLinda Hathcox

by: Phillip Martin, Progress Texas

Mon Jun 12, 2006 at 06:25 PM CDT

(Today marks the long-awaited return of the 40/40. I finally found my interview with VaLinda, so I'll be finishing her 40/40 feature this week, and will also feature another one of our statewide candidates -- Hank Gilbert. Next week, check for Damon's features on Fred Head and David Van Os. - promoted by Phillip Martin)

If ever a candidate was qualified to be Commissioner of the General Land Office, it is VaLinda Hathcox. A quick look at her bio says it all:
ADVERTISEMENT
  • First woman to hold the position of Director of Governmental Relations and Programs with the Texas Attorney General, the State Bar of Texas, the Texas Association of Counties;
  • First woman president of Austin Young Lawyers.
  • Charter member of the Hopkins County Democratic Women, Travis County Democratic Women and Texas Democratic Women;
  • Helped write some of the first alternative energy laws in Texas;
  • Helped repeal Texas' inheritance tax
  • While working with the Texas Association of Counties, was among the first to turn certain "unfunded mandates" into funded mandates at the county level;
  • Under the guide of Jim Mattox, helped successfully move the state's CPS cases to the Attorney General's office; and
  • In a wonderful deliverance of the symbolic, actually raises and protects buffalo, which is on the seal of the Land Commissioner's office.

I first met VaLinda at the TDP office, where we sat down and had a wonderful discussion about her background, the type of campaign she planned to run (and win), and her ambitions to serve the people of Texas. She has the sort of issue-oriented government experience that you want in a candidate, combined with a real sense of person-to-person communication.

VaLinda is running against current Republican incumbent, Jerry Patterson. To read more about her background, you may go here.

Excellent! (4.33 / 3)
I'm looking forward to reading more about her!  The more we know about our candidates the more we can help get them elected.

Good timing Phillip.

Thanks Phillip... (4.67 / 6)
VaLinda is a very qualified candidate, and one of the best Democrats you'd ever want to meet.  Her East Texas upbringing, combined with her extensive training and knowledge of the Land Commissioner's Office, make her a "slam dunk" to win if given any support whatsoever.  The TDP is really doing the down-ballots a huge disservice.  Too bad we can't all be "top ballot" candidates.

Keep plugging for our "sister", Valinda Hathcox.

We can use this information to take ACTION! (4.33 / 3)
Write letters to the editors of your local papers. People read those letters and it will help inform large numbers.

We have to find ways to combat the defeatest attitudes of our own party!  The statewide candidates will win!  Let's get behind them and show the TDP how to support OUR candidates!

I will say... (3.00 / 1)
...that the folks at the TDP aren't defeatists. In fact, were it not for the folks at the TDP, I would never have met VaLinda, nor would I have had the opportunity to meet so many of our House and Statewide candidates over the weekend.

We do need to be out writing letters and spreading the news, issues, and message for our candidates. That's what the 40/40 project is designed to do -- to make a difference in a positive way and work together to deliver victories in November.

Now, a very great man once said that some people rob you with a fountain pen.

Let me help you get to know VaLinda Hathcox (5.00 / 1)
VaLinda is my older sister and a wonderful aunt to my four sons. Family is of vital importance to VaLinda as she puts our geneological search on hold while she runs her campaign from the trunk of her car. Traveling all across this state with our 84 year old mother at her side. VaLinda and our two brothers have helped with the management of our family ranch since the death of our father in 1996.  There is not a more loyal  sister, daughter or democrat. Loyal to the state, and especially it's heritage. Our family has always felt the importance of the land and what it has to offer. We were taught not to be wastful of natural resources because one day they may run out. I can guarantee that there will not be waste in the Land Commissioners office. VaLinda is very intelligent, but that intelligence doesn't get in the way of her practicality and efficiency. VaLinda is extremely hard working, you may find her mending a fence, shredding a pasture or setting the table with the fine china for a dinner party. There isn't much that she can't do or won't try, and because of her, she has provided many opportunities for me and my family. That's the candidate for Land Commissioner that I know and love and the one that will work the hardest for this state and the office of Land Commissioner.

It was a delight to get to know your mom and sister (0.00 / 0)
during the State Convention. Having them in the booth with Dale Henry across from David Van Os and Hank Gilbert's booth, allowed us to "bond."  I knew next to nothing about VaLinda when the convention started. Working close to her, I grew to learn that she is a very exceptional lady. It is an honor to support her candidacy. I know that she will assume that office without requiring a learning curve. She understands the REASONS Texas School Children are shortchanged by our State Officials despite the riches of the permanent school fund dedicated to public education. She is determined to revamp misguided priorities and return sanity to the Land Office of Texas.

I am especially impressed with VaLinda's incredible work ethic, perservance, and exception intelligence. I'm looking forward to hearing what she has to say September 30th when she speaks at the "TAKE THE TRUTH TO THE STREETS FESTIVAL AND STREET FAIR" in Arlington.
