President Obama to Fundraise in Texas for DNC, DSCC

by: David Mauro

Mon Jul 19, 2010 at 10:35 PM CDT

The Statesman's Jason Embry reports that President Barack Obama will headline August 9 fundraisers in Austin and Houston for the Democratic National Committee and Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, respectively.

The event in Austin is "tentatively scheduled" for the Four Seasons with tickets starting at $5000 a person.

Bill White spokesperson Katy Bacon told the Statesman that White "had no plans to attend" either events and said instead "Bill will be talking with Texans about the future of our state." Some will try to twist this into a negative, but White is doing exactly what he should do: focus on his state and his race.

That presents a clear contrast with Rick Perry, who most recently appeared with the national Republican Party's most sought after campaigner, Sarah Palin, in Tyler on June 28. After going on sixteen years of governors who are eager to make their mark on national politics and ignore problems here in Texas, it is time we had a governor whose top priority is the future of Texas, not posturing for higher office.

Do we have a US Senate race in Texas this year? (3.00 / 1)
No. So this fundraiser is for Senate candidates elsewhere.

No offense to President Obama -- or Harry Reid or Barbara Boxer of Russ Feingold or even Alvin Greene --  but I would really appreciate it if nobody attended the DSCC fundraiser nor contributed money to the DSCC in this cycle, since we have important races right here in Texas which need financial assistance.

Charles Kuffner has the evidence that suggests we can win a few statewide races with some help from those who would be able to give $5000 to a Senate race elsewhere in the country (or for that matter the overhead expenses of the DSCC).

A personal aside to those who fit this description: you may not get the same influence you seek by contributing to a statewide candidate -- or a Texas House candidate -- instead of some unidentified out-of-state US Senator, but you will get something better: the satisfaction of knowing your contribution has the likelihood of making a much bigger difference in the lives of fellow Texans, particularly ones less fortunate than you.

Please consider this request sincerely and carefully.

But it trickles down... (1.00 / 1)
As always the rationale of the Texas Democratic Party is send all the money to the gubernatorial candidate and then he or she will draw large numbers of Democrats to the polls, and maybe some Independents and Republicans, as a result of the millions spent on slick television advertising and the votes will just "trickle down" the ballot and result in all the Democrats winning their respective races.

Works very well as you can tell by past elections.

And if you have some extra change, well, don't waste it on the other state and local candidates. Send it to Washington. A grand tradition started by the Clintons.

What bothers me more than four more years of Rick Perry is four more years of Greg Abbott.

But we must support White. And all the national candidates. Not "down ballot" candidates who can't win on their own anyway according, obviously, to the movers and shakers who move and shake the money around to the candidates.

Some apparently would rather have Perry and Abbott than Perry and Radnofsky.  Believing they will have White and so it doesn't matter who is Attorney General.

It doesn't matter to them but it should matter to other Democrats who should know you don't put all your eggs into one basket, or one race, but apparently don't.

more important than other states: Texas Governor's race (0.00 / 0)
right here at home where your money and your vote count for Texas!

This matters, folks.

We need a serious GOTV effort to elect Bill White.

The window is 102 days, now. Going to / giving for the DSCC -- and its out-of-state emphasis -- is the equivalent of Rick Perry's looking beyond Texas.
