| From a statement issued by Chairman Boyd Richie, just moments ago at the TDP Convention:
"Today, on behalf of the Texas Democratic Party, we filed a petition against the Texas Republican Party, to prohibit them from convening a successor to put Tom Delay on the ballot. In addition to that, we obtained a temporary injunction, prohibting them from proceding further until this case can be heard. We did this on behalf of the voters of the State of Texas, to protect their rights, because Tom Delay believes they should pick the members of Congress instead of the voters of this state. For too long, we've let Delay participate in backroom deals.
Today, the TDP has stood up and said, "enough is enough is enough -- we are not going to take it anymore!"
The injunction will temporarily prevent the Texas Republican Party from replacing Tom Delay in Congress. Delay is expected to resign from his seat in CD 22 tomorrow, but many Republicans are already pushing to replace him. The argument is that until Delay has officially moved out of his district -- which will require much more than getting a Virginia driver's license, which is all he's done so far -- the RPT shouldn't be able to "name" his successor.
Thankfully, the courts agreed to offer the injunction. Score this one more victory for Texas Democrats, and one more defeat for Tom Delay. |
