Bill White Speaks Easy Through New Media

by: Katherine Haenschen

Mon May 10, 2010 at 11:03 AM CDT

Tomorrow night, Bill White and Jimmy LaFave will appear together in Downtown Austin for a fundraiser in support of our Democratic gubernatorial candidate. It should be a fun time. I encourage you to join myself and probably 80% of the people I know at the event, and since it starts at 8:30 you can head on over after the big TDP fundraiser.

Anyways, the point of this post isn't just to promote the event, but to look at some of the cooler aspects of its promotion that involve new media.

1) The campaign made a video with Bill White promoting the event, from the venue itself. Hey, that rooftop bar looks pretty fun on a hopefully-warm summer night!

It's a nice touch. I'm sure White's schedule is pretty packed, but I appreciate his taking the time to produce a video for a low-dollar event. It's great to see campaigns really catering to the grassroots donor base. I'd be curious to see if the campaign has made any other videos for other events around the state.

2) Did you catch that it's cheaper ($25 vs $35) if you RSVP online? That's handy for the campaign, because it better estimates attendance, and they're sure to catch your email address and the actual contact information that links to your credit card. I'd be curious if it is easier to get these donors who RSVP early online to give again and again. And while I am sure the door staff will work to get this info from folks who attend, far too many people who attend events try and skip portions of the sign-in sheets, or give their "spam account" email address. Getting full and complete contact information for donors and supporters is crucial to follow-up and organization, so folks who attend events, please just fill out the sheet fully and completely, and then our candidates have a better chance of actually winning.

3) This is yet another cool example of how the Bill White campaign is using new media to engage people. Remember the contest to design the GOTV poster  leading up to the primary? And, of course, White and his staff are very active on Twitter and Facebook, and even engage directly with followers and fans. It helps reinforce the message that White really is focused on service, and wants to interact directly with the people of Texas and develop the solutions we need.

In any case, here's the details for the event, in case you missed them. See you there!

DCCC quits on Hawaii (1.00 / 2)
This is ugly at this point. Pres. Obama's boyhood district is going to go Republican and the DCCC is quitting in that race because two discombobulated Democrats can't get their act straight.

Republicans freaking out about gay camping (0.00 / 0)
Random, unrelated, irrelevant comment about some other story that makes your party look like idiots and has nothing to do with the post.

Also - give Republicans the special election.  The DCCC won't even have to spend money in November to win it back when there's just one Democrat running for the seat.  I'm glad they are saving their resources.

Shoot - when we take it back in November, it'll offset the total net number of losses that Democrats suffer, just like Cao in Louisiana.

Meanwhile, you keep focusing on whatever the newest #tcot hashtag is, we'll focus on beating Rick Perry and taking back the Texas House.

what does that have to do with Bill White's use of new media to engage supporters in his campaign? :-)
