AISD & ACC Trustee Endorsements

by: Burnt Orange Report

Mon May 03, 2010 at 08:26 PM CDT

(Remember- today is election day! - promoted by Karl-Thomas Musselman)

With one day left in early voting, and still, only 1% of voters having cast a ballot in Travis County, we at Burnt Orange Report offer the following endorsements in contested races for the ACC & AISD School Board elections.

Note: ACC Places are district-wide. A map of AISD districts is here with place 9 being district-wide.

ACC Place 5: Davis Jones

As the only student running for the Austin Community College board, a board with no students currently elected, we agree with Davis's argument that a student's voice should be heard.

ACC Place 6: Guadalupe Sosa

A long time advocate for ACC, Sosa is more than qualified to serve and would make an excellent addition to the board.

AISD Place 6: Lori Moya

While Moya can be uneven as a trustee, her opponent has no education experience and is an active member in the Tea Party movement.

AISD Place 7: Robert Schneider

An incumbent, we don't see any particular argument to vote Schneider out.

AISD Place 9: Tamala Barksdale

With 5 candidates in the race, it's entirely possible this election will go to a runoff. Barksdale is an impressive candidate- an African-American woman with Democratic credentials, a passion for education, and hopefully a bright future in public service. We see her as a better fit than her leading opponents who include former Cap Metro manager Dianne Mendoza (who if left to run AISD like CapMetro means classes will start 2 years after they are scheduled to begin) and Julie Cowan who has voted in over a half dozen Republican primaries.

Mike Perrine is also a student (ACC Place 6) (0.00 / 0)
Not advocating for him over Sosa, but it kinda kills Jones' argument.

It would, but.. (2.00 / 1)
He's not an active candidate.  Davis is an active candidate who shows up to things while I have never seen Mike Perrine.

I could have sworn the goalposts were over there before (0.00 / 0)
I've seen Perrine, does that help?

Well then (0.00 / 0)
That does help.  I guess to mean that, as a member of the Austin Progressive Coalition, I particularly noticed how he did not show up to our endorsement meeting and Davis did.

Nor when I talk to people about these races do I ever hear of Perrine.  It's entirely possible he's just not campaigning in the circles that I normally find myself in.  (As is apparent by your comments.)

Fair enough (0.00 / 0)
I wouldn't claim that he's doing a good job campaigning.  Still, there's a lot of people who have value, but haven't had exposure to standard campaign techniques. Doesn't negate the fact that Davis Jones is not the only student running, which was the original point.

Vote Fred McGhee for ACC Trustee, Place 5 (0.00 / 0)
I will not directly comment on the notion that "a student's voice should be heard" as a rationale for this endorsement decision.  Allow me to instead point to a recent editorial in "The Accent" the official student newspaper of ACC titled "Student Government in need of students." The editorial speaks for itself.

If you are still pondering your voting decision, I ask you to consider the following:

• I am the only candidate to forthrightly discuss the need for improved developmental education at ACC, and to do so using actual THECB data, solid policy analysis, and terrific reporting, such as Brian Thevenot's recent Texas Tribune article.

• I am the only veteran running, and would be the only veteran to serve on the ACC board if elected.  ACC has one of the largest veteran enrollments of any college in Texas.

• My academic and teaching credentials are the best of anyone in the race.  My M.A. and Ph.D. are from UT Austin, not a private for-profit college that awards online degrees.  I probably have more publications (peer reviewed and otherwise) than the other candidates put together.

• Most importantly, I have actually LIVED the experience of a typical ACC student and know what it feels like to come out on the other side.  I know how hard it is and I know what it takes.

For citations and more information, I encourage you to visit my website at http://www.fredmcghee.com

While you're at it, I also encourage you to watch tonight's episode of PBS Frontline, titled "College, Inc."  The topic is the role of Wall Street in the proliferation of private, for profit colleges, many of whom target people like the typical ACC student.

Yes, but (0.00 / 0)
For the AISD place 9 race, I support Tamala Barksdale.  I've spoken with her at a few events, and was very impressed with her intelligence and her understanding of AISD issues. I also think she brings an interesting perspective to the board, as a black woman whose daughter attended high-powered magnet schools. She understands the challenges of public education and she understands success.

But don't sell Julie Cowan short. Yes, she's a Republican, but she has an incredible record of PTA involvement, and this is a non-partisan board after all. Her commitment to public education is manifest, and she's a living example of how parents and teachers should be working together to help kids; I'm just unsure of what she would bring to the table when AISD is deciding about the have-not schools.  Bottom line: I'm voting for Barksdale, and I have a Barksdale sign in my front yard, but either she or Cowan would make a good board member.

For ACC Place 6, I heard all four candidates at a recent NxNW Dems event, and I was not impressed by Davis Jones. The idea of having a student on the board is appealing, but I'm not convinced that he knows his stuff. His three opponents, Vic Villarreal, David Reiter, and Fred McGhee, all have solid Democratic credentials, and all know more about educational policy than Jones.

For reference, have a look at the League of Women Voters of the Austin Area Voters Guide and the Austin Chronicle endorsements . (Thanks to Reuben Leslie for those links.)

I meant ACC Place 5, not Place 6 (0.00 / 0)
For Place 6, Lupe Sosa is the clear choice.
