Austin American-Statesman Endorses Mindy Montford for the 299th District Court

by: Karl-Thomas Musselman

Mon Apr 05, 2010 at 00:49 PM CDT

The Austin American-Statesman has endorsed Mindy Montford for the 299th District Court Runoff.

Let's talk math. Let's talk civics. Let's talk about upcoming elections in which your vote can have outsized impact on the outcome.

They're called runoffs, and history tells us people don't run out to participate in them. That's the civics part. The math part is that the fewer the number of votes, the more each vote counts.

...

Travis County Democrats return to the polls to finish picking a nominee to replace retiring Judge Charlie Baird, a Democrat, in the 299th District Court. We recommend Mindy Montford over Karen Sage in a contest that features two solid contenders. There is no GOP candidate for the seat.

Glad to see my hometown daily agree with me!

And then there is John Bradley (0.00 / 0)
John Bradley, the far right wing Republican District Attorney of Williamson County, gave Montford $1,000 when she ran for DA in 2008.

Really? (5.00 / 1)
I thought the Karen Sage folks were going to keep it classy.

Broad brush, KT... (3.00 / 2)
Scott's made an issue of Bradley for a long time. You're using a pretty broad brush if you're going to start characterizing one person's comment as all Karen Sage folks...

Now, a very great man once said that some people rob you with a fountain pen.

Not really a folk of either candidate (0.00 / 0)
I'm just a progressive Democrat wondering what John Bradley saw in Montford in 2008 that made him give her $1,000. I imagine he saw something in her politics that he liked. I bet there are very few Democrats he would have given that kind of money to no matter how much he likes them personally, because they would have been too progressive for him.

I hope Charlie Baird is not done with public service and that he chooses to run for another position in the future.

I know (0.00 / 0)
I'm just giving people a hard time. It's like everyone's on pins and needles wanting the other side to say something negative first. In reality, I don't think much really is that negative for either side which has been nice.

Charlie Baird (0.00 / 0)
Many of us at the courthouse are sick that Judge Baird is stepping off the bench. So much so, that, rumor has it, he is being courted to run for district attorney.

I have heard that too (0.00 / 0)
If he were to become Travis County DA, Charlie Baird would probably be one of the greatest District Attorneys Texas has ever seen.

I have no doubt Judge Baird would be an extraordinary district attorney. He would bring a progressive, fearless, intelligent approach to criminal justice.
