HD-76: Norma Chavez Raises Opponent's Sexual Orientation

by: David Mauro

Sun Apr 04, 2010 at 11:13 AM CDT

Last week we covered the negative attacks in the Democratic runoff in El Paso between incumbent Norma Chavez and challenger Naomi Gonzalez. At that time, each candidate had accused the other of being a closet Republican.

Now, as the conventional wisdom appears to be that Chavez is behind in her race to win a sixth term, things have gotten personal. Chavez has said that Gonzalez is a lesbian and should publicly come out.

Chavez claims that the issue is relevant because it may influence their legislative opinions. Chavez opposes gay marriage. Gonzalez has not stated her personal opinion on the issue but has said she will respect the wishes of Texas voters, who voted to add an amendment banning gay marriage to the state constitution in 2005.

The El Paso Times reported that many El Paso Democrats, including County Party Chair Danny Anchondo, have shown disapproval for Chavez's tactics.

"If somebody is lesbian or gay, our arms are open to all these individuals," Anchondo said. "All these people are part of the party, so I don't understand why someone would be using those terms to attack somebody."

Read more about the story.

Early voting in this race (and all other Texas runoffs) begins tomorrow.

Updated: A reader from El Paso sends in this video from the Lion Star Blog of the candidate forum during which Chavez brought up Gonzalez's sexual orientation. The statement begins around the 6:29 mark.

Very ashamed to admit this, but (0.00 / 0)
I was not paying attention to this race or felt vested in it's outcome . . . until right now.  Where is my credit card?

Such an interesting (0.00 / 0)
candidate forum. They were all so engaged. But there didn't seem to be anyone moderating.

This race (0.00 / 0)
looks like it has gotten ugly on both sides. I am in no way condoning Norma Chavez's actions, no ones sexual preference should ever become part of the political discussion of a candidates qualifications for office. It also sounds like Gonzalez had made some offhand comment before Chavez spoke. From what I can make out someone in the audience asked about sb 1967, and Gonzalez said she did not know what it was. Turns out this bill deals with motorcycle safety, and it look like there are bikers in the audience. Gonzalez then says "Judging from your appearance" and says something to the questioner that has been drowned out. Norma Chavez when she begins to speak claims that Gonzalez had just made an offhand remark against bikers. You can also here the questioner say that he is a school teacher and that Gonzalez should not be so fast to make snap judgments against someones appearance.

So it looks like both candidates were in the wrong here, and while one side was pointed out in the post, maybe everyone should listen to the entire exchange.  This does not in anyway excuse Chavez from making accusations about her opponents sexual preference, but I do think that one should not make snap judgments based on appearance, especially if those people are potential voters.

It's "sexual orientation" not "preference" n/t (0.00 / 0)

sorry (0.00 / 0)
I don't know how to edit it or I would.

Can't edit here (0.00 / 0)
Just post a correction. :) I just corrected it since it is so often used incorrectly and "preference" implies choice.  And we don't have that choice. So, I always correct it whenever I have the opportunity to do so.

I watched to entire video again and read the accompanying story about it...I wish the video hadn't been cut off when it was since a voice in the crowd had just begun to calm them down. I'm curious about what he said. Maybe someone who was there will see this and tell us.

Based on other accounts I've read (0.00 / 0)
Gonzalez said that judging from the questioner's appearance, she assumed the bill had something to do with motorcycles.

"In this world of sin and sorrow there is always something to be thankful for; as for me, I rejoice that I am not a Republican." - H.L. Mencken

I think the runoff will be decided more by who's in bed with TLR (0.00 / 0)
than who's in bed with another woman.  I love that Texans for Lawsuit Reform can fund a Democrat and the incumbent Democrat has to resort to this sort of absurd nonsense (which only further clouds who is running to the left of whom).  This should be a non-issue but it promises to distract the voters' attention from the deeper differences between the two candidates.
