John Sharp Statement on Hutchison's Decision Not to Resign

by: David Mauro

Wed Mar 31, 2010 at 00:40 PM CDT

Kay Bailey Hutchison's announcement this morning that she will remain in the U.S. Senate may not have surprised many, but it still has to be disappointing for Democratic U.S. Senate candidate John Sharp.

“I certainly enjoyed visiting with Texans for the last year and a half and learning about their concerns as we waited for Kay Bailey Hutchison to resign. I hope she’s learned what I’ve learned from this experience which is people are sick and tired of business as usual and the bitter partisanship of Washington DC . It is time to put the country ahead of both political parties.”

Sharp, along with then Senate candidate Bill White, announced their intentions to run for the Senate in December 2008, when some viewed Hutchison's resignation as imminent.

Sharp has said previously he would run for Senate even if the election was in 2012, when Hutchison's current term will expire. Hutchison's indecisiveness effectively forced Sharp to sit out this political cycle. The perceived advantages Sharp would have brought to a special elecion (high name ID and an ability to self-financed his campaign in a short time window) may not exist in a 2012 general election, however.

It's good that KBH is staying in the Senate (0.00 / 0)
It's better for us Dems to try to take an open seat in 2012, when we have Obama on the ballot driving up turnout, and presumably have a better economy than we have now, than to fight for it this year, lose badly, and have to face an incumbent in 2012.

And as bad as KBH is on the big ideological issues (like health care) she's much better than Cornyn on the non-ideological stuff, such as genuine constituent service. She also doesn't try to turn everything into an ideological litmus test. For the next 2.5 years, I'd much rather be represented in the Senate by her than by a Perry appointee.

Really? (0.00 / 0)
Lose badly? I think that she's staying in there because they fear what might happen if she steps down. It might just fire up TX Democrats a lot more than they are right now. Republicans did take note in '08 when that happens. And I've seen her do the "ideological" thing, too. Did you see her speech on the Senate floor before the health care bill was passed?

Yeah, lose badly (0.00 / 0)
I didn't give Sharp a ghost of a chance in a special election, where the turnout is small and usually leans Republican, especially in a year where Republicans are really energized. I thought that Sharp and White were crazy to run for the Senate, where they were doomed and wouldn't be able to help the rest of the ticket, instead of for Governor.  I'm grateful that White switched races, and I do give Sharp (or another Dem) a decent chance at the Senate in 2012.

As for how ideological KBH has been, here position on health care reform was just awful, just like the other 40 R's in the Senate. And her posturing on the issue was absurd -- just like the other 40 R's in the Senate. But there's a lot of work that the Senate does that isn't especially ideological. On those common-ground issues, Cornyn tends to look for an ideological angle anyway, while KBH tends to deal with them straightforwardly. For instance, I expect her to approach the START treaty rationally, while I expect Cornyn to echo whatever McConnell decides to say.

She also looks after Texas' interests (both earmarks and things like getting the IRS to allow sales taxes to be deductible if you don't pay state income tax), which is what's behind Ciro Rodriguez' support for her decision to stay.

Don't get me wrong. I'd much rather have John Sharp in the Senate than KBH, but I'd also much rather have KBH than a Perry appointee, and I'd much rather shoot for an open seat in 2012 (when KBH will almost certainly retire) than face a Republican incumbent.

Anybody but Sharp... (3.00 / 2)
just sayin'....

I'd prefer new blood. (0.00 / 0)
I'd prefer a rising star in the Senate or House run for Senate rather than Sharp.

Or Bill White (0.00 / 0)
Should he happen to lose the Governor's race in 2010, God forbid.

Agreed, indeed (0.00 / 0)
And, somebody like that might come along by 2012.

John Sharp - - - (0.00 / 0)

I suspect John Sharp will have opportunities to run for the Senate again.

Meanwhile, KBH will 'get nothing done,' except for keeping Rick Perry from naming her successor.

When I visited her office in Washington in 2004, I asked what she considered the number one issue for the people of Texas.  The response:  "The Re-election of George W. Bush."

Isn't it true (0.00 / 0)
that she just does and says whatever they tell her to do and say? We deserve so much better than this woman. She is truly an embarrassment.
