What Party of Values? RNC Spends Money at Strip Clubs, Rick Perry Throws Vegas Bachelor Party

by: Phillip Martin, Progress Texas

Mon Mar 29, 2010 at 01:00 PM CDT

The big national news this morning is the extravagant spending by the Republican National Committee. From the Washington Post:

The Republican National Committee spent tens of thousands of dollars last month on luxury jets, posh hotels and other high-flying expenses, according to new Federal Election Commission filings, including nearly $2,000 for "meals" at Voyeur West Hollywood, a lesbian-themed nightclub that features topless dancers in bondage outfits.

What party of values? Texas Governor Rick Perry is also one to spend lavishly at places not considered by most Texans as family friendly. From a Dallas Morning News piece from last October, "Gov. Rick Perry's trip to Vegas includes bachelor party for his son":

They say that what happens in Las Vegas stays there, but for Rick Perry, not all of it has.

The governor's Oct. 24 political trip to Las Vegas to meet with Brian Sandoval, a Republican candidate for Nevada governor, included a bachelor party for Perry's son, Griffin, spokesman Mark Miner conceded Thursday.

[...]

The governor used a combination of money from his political donors and the Republican Governors Association to pay for his Vegas trip. It's illegal to use campaign funds for personal travel, but Perry has a history of combining business with pleasure trips so that political entities will pick up the tab.

Party of values? What? Eileen Smith, writing for Texas Monthly, satirizes the point beautifully in her post titled, "She blinded me with bondage":

So this is what RNC chairman Michael Steele meant by an “urban-suburban hip-hop what-up off the hook” campaign to make the Republican party more diverse. And by “more diverse,” I mean “crotchless panties.” Yes, apparently the RNC spent almost $2,000 in party funds at Voyeur West Hollywood, “a bondage-themed nightclub featuring topless women dancers imitating lesbian sex.” (For $1,000 more they would’ve done more than imitate but this is the party of fiscal conservatives.)

It is most amusing (0.00 / 0)
To see ideologues of the left get just as worked up about sex as ideologues of the right.  All that blather sounds the same no matter which side is spewing it.

I don't necessarily think it's one and the same (3.00 / 1)
I think a lot of people would agree with me that if you wanna go to a strip club, then knock yourself out, have fun.  But it's a bit hypocritical to pander to "family values" voters while spending their donations $1 at a time at those same clubs.

There is a difference (3.00 / 1)
The Republican Party promotes itself as the holier than thou group and a party of family values. Republicans have been pandering to religious and social conservatives for as long as I can remember.  And so when politicians like David Vitter, John Ensign, Larry Craig and others are outed for affairs, frequenting brothels, or for soliciting gay sex in men's rooms it is clear to see that there are a lot of hypocrites among the family values lawmakers.

The person who charged $2000 at a lesbian bondage club to the RNC credit card has been identified.

The person who expensed a nearly $2,000 meal on the Republican National Committee's (RNC) dime at a risque Los Angeles club has been identified as Erik Brown.

A profile of Brown on another website describes him as Chief Executive Officer at DMI. He is actively involved in a number of conservative groups and his church's ministry.

UPDATE 3:55 p.m.: An RNC spokesperson confirms that Brown will reimburse the committee for the expenses. The committee says he wasn't working for it in any capacity, which raises questions about how he had access to the account.

Well. It's just another conservative Christian having a wild and crazy time.

Conservative women's groups are quite irate (0.00 / 0)

As women we find the very idea of officials from either party conducting business inside an establishment that objectifies and demeans women outrageous," Penny Nance, the Chief Executive Officer of Concerned Women for America, said in a written statement Monday.

"Aren't these girls young enough to be your daughters?," Nance asked. "This kind of behavior is not appropriate for national leaders that our children should be able to look up to as role models, and that our daughters could be working for. Did you really swill drinks, ogle young girls and plan party business at this kind of establishment? Please explain!"

I'd say the fires of hell will soon be licking at the derrieres of the boys who organized the outing.

Hell knows no fury like the wrath of outraged mothers.
